I remember living in Southern California and Charlie having a little garden. He grew broccoli and tomatoes, and that is all because that is all the space he had to work with. The broccoli was delicious but fairly sort lived, but the tomatoes…ahh the tomatoes. He planted them as small plants in March, and we had to dig up the plants at the end of December because we were moving. They were still bearing fruit, and plenty of it. I remember being amazed that we could have fresh tomatoes in December.

Now, our daughter has a tomato plant in her front yard. It doesn’t get a lotTomato in So Cal -- Dec of sun so it isn’t as prolific as it could be, but she still gets good tomatoes off of it. Charlie has had two fresh red tomatoes off of her vine since he’s been out there, but he forgot to photograph them before he picked them (not a novelty to him…been there, done that). I did, however, get him to photograph a green one for this article.

Most of the people I tell here in S.C. about picking red ripe tomatoes at Christmastime in California don’t believe me! HaHa! They really don’t! But it is true. It is a great thing to be able to have tomatoes year round.

Heck, there's not much that won’t grow in So Cal…

I am jealous. The only thing I can grow effectively during the warm months are weeds. Fortunately, my wife has a green thumb, and she passed on the green thumb gene to our daughters.

Sheila--All of our December tomatoes are trucked into Minnesota. Living in California and having fresh tomatos at Christmas must be a real treat for you! Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I think one of my favorite things about living here in San Diego is that the plants don’t know that there are supposed to be four seasons, so they just think there’s one, and they flower and fruit all year long.
