Entiat Mountains

Living in Chelan County in the Entiat Mountain is a special place. Wildlife is all around. I have had elk and bear in the front yard. There is also the deer, ermine (short tailed weasel), owls and beavers, just to name a few. But when you live with and around wild creatures there can be some give and take.

Caught in the coop

Here we have some take- My neighbor has had chickens for several years now and we find they are a great attractant to many of the wild creatures. This bobcat got into the coop and cleaned out the flock (and got trapped there). Only one chicken survived. My neighbor understands living with wild creatures so he was not too upset with loosing the flock (It also helps that he planned to move the coop and pen so this makes it a little easier).

The bobcat is part of the Lynx family, and is the smallest of that group, weighing 20-30 pounds. There are found only in North America and gets its name from its short, bobbed tail. The bobcat is found in a variety of habitats from woodlands to swamps and mountains. They can live in close proximity to people, but usually they are shy animals. They estimate there are one million bobcats in the United States alone. Making the bobcat the most abundant wildcat in the U.S. and has the greatest range of all native North American cats

Bobcat TracksBobcat tracks are fairly distinctive. A typical bobcat track is about 1 3/4 inches long by 1 7/8 inches wide. The track is more rounded than that of the coyote or dog and shows no claw marks, like most of the cat family. The ball pad of the bobcat is distinct from that of the coyote in that the front border is two-lobed. The main difference between the front and rear tracks is the somewhat smaller ball pad of the hind foot. Tracks tend to be slightly longer than wide, though this is not always evident, as it depends on the spread of the toes

Don, we had bobcats in Connecticut when I was a kid----and occasionally they would get in the chicken coop

Charles,

This is the second one that he has caught. The other was in a live trap (not the coop). They are quite beautiful animals. We see them around fairly regularly. But they move pretty quick, so it usually a glance.

Steve,

It is amazing how reflective their eyes are. My first shot did not turn out with out flash.
