Being in the "sales" field I learned a long time ago, treat people as you would want to be treated.

I have had clients with credit that is less than stellar and worked with them as if they were clients with A+ credit.  Clients facing divorce, foreclosure, bankruptcy, getting married, buying for the first time, buying for the 5th time.  Refinancing to lower their interest rate, pay off debt, or obtain a home equity loan for emergency.  No matter what the situation they all have been treated and respected with the same fairness.  I don't think I am any better than the client with the low credit scores nor do I think I am any less than the couple with the stellar credit, or the clients driving a Ferrari or riding a bicycle.

Over the labor day weekend, my husband and I found ourselves in a pickle!  We were pulled over on our way home from Wisconsin Dells on our motorcycles.  We were cruising along at 62 mph on a 65 mph highway.  Cars and trucks flying past us at 75 -80 mph.  In the middle of the 4 lane highway is a state trooper taking radar facing us as we cruise by.  Neither one of us think anything about it, were not speeding, we are in the "slow" lane and minding our own business.  About 5 miles later down the road, Mr. Friendly State trooper with an EGO two times bigger than himself, blares his siren behind us.  We pull over to the side of the road, cars and trucks still whizzing by.  Mr. State trooper manages to maneuver himself and his big badge out of the squad car.

Long and short of it is we were not pulled over for speeding, as you would think, as he was taking radar.  We were pulled over because we have loud pipes on our motorcycles.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?  Could you say that again Mr. State trooper, I can't hear you over the trucks that are flying by us as we stand on the side of a 65 mph road.  The entire time Mr. State trooper spoke to us in his condescending tone and managed to contain his smirk, he assured us he was not out to pick on Harley's.  He did however need to put a stop to the loud motorcycles due to the fact that he has had a blown ear drum, and the "little old ladies" on his block are constantly complaining about the loud motorcycles at the stop sign.  I'm sorry I must have missed the little old lady and the stop sign?!  After receiving our tickets, with a price tag large enough to buy a nice new TV, we spent the next 5 minutes or so trying to get back out into speeding traffic.  It's still unclear to me how my loud pipes were more dangerous than us pulling over on a 4 lane road with a speed limit of 65 mph and then trying to get back out into it?

For those of you that are going to say, well, they are illegal.  I agree, there are certain standards for the decibel level, and the tickets we received are probably not arguable because of this law.  In my opinion, those pipes have saved my life on more than one occasion.

My whole point here is, we felt inferior to Mr. State trooper with his obviously big badge.  He was arrogant, condescending, and down right rude.  I cant tell you the last time either of us had received a ticket.  But I can tell you than I may not be as frustrated with this situation had we been treated with respect.

Regardless of what type of industry you work in always remember, treat people the way you would want to be treated.  Everyone is someone's mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandparent etc.  Would you want any of your family treated the way you may be treating someones else's loved one?

Oh my gosh Kim how I know your pain! I've had my fair share of rude police officers and I've had some respectful ones. The ticket is always a little more bearable when they treat you with respect. I don't have the best driving record so it seems they naturally have a distaste for me when I get pulled over but yet I too feel like I don't get treated with respect.

Sorry for the way you were treated! I also try to treat people the way I want to be treated :)

You make an excellent point. We all need to be aware of subtle things like our tone of voice and facial expressions. It is not always the words that express condescension.

I can't identify with Rick, however I can with Rosario, and to tag along with her thought. Body language can also be perceived as condescension. As far as the officers attitude. It just figures unfortunately, for what ever reason you give some of these guys a weapon, lights, siren, and some responsibility and they in there own minds become Greek gods, we are lowly beings, you should bow in my presence. In my opinion they are suffering from some form of insecurity and they are using there job to feel better about there selves.

P.S. sorry about using your comment section to rant like this. Your story got me worked up!

Kim, I am not saying anything but in many cases I think that person really had a problem down below....with the size of his manhood...:-)...(Hope I did not cross the line)

We were not aware that pipes were illegal!!!??? However, I would never get on a bike without them. Many motorcycle accidents happen when a car is changing lanes and does not see a bike on the side of them. If you can't be seen, at least you can be heard! Why wait 5 miles to pull you over anyways??? Did he get a call from a little old lady???  Sorry that happened to you! What a way to ruin a great weekend getaway! Our neighbor is a Dupage County Sherriff....he has pipes on his Harley!!

Unreal Kim! I guess it is safe to say you don't have the original pipes on the bikes huh? :) I think its time to move to FL at least here the only time they come after loud pipes is during events... GO FIGURE THAT ONE? 100,000 bikes in town and they want to know who's is louder? Oh BTW It looks like Blackfoot will be at the White Eagle for Biketober Fest, come on down!

Kim, I feel your pain and frustration. I can't stand people who talk down to me, but the best thing to do is just to keep calm and speak to them, as you said, as the way you would want to be treated.

Rick... Much more bearable when you get respect with it.  However I find that some do not feel that they need to give you respect once they have that badge!  Thanks for your comment!

Rob...  Rant away!  I feel as you do about this person!  He is one of those with a badge, lights and a gun that acts as if his SH*T don't stink!  At least he acted that way anyway!  I apparently got my husband going again with this post...he was angry all over again!

Rick and Lynn... Anything other than the stock pipes are illegal.  As Mr. Ego pointed out to me, there is VERY small wording on the bottom of my pipes that state "not for street use"  and Kevin's are straight pipes, meaning no baffles!  So illegal per say.  As to pulling us over 5 miles later, some have said that Wisconsin cops do not like those of us from Illinois.  I guess he needed time to get behind us to see where we were from...  Thank you very much, those of us from his neighboring state that spend thousands of dollars a year in the Dells are pleased to know how much its appreciated!  We have done many rides with cops and for cops, all with pipes just like ours!  No mention has ever been made!

Mana... You are right, it is better to remain calm and be the BIGGER person!  It was hard!  I had to stop myself several times!  This man was no bigger than me, and my husband is 6'2 looking down at him, I was worried that I would also need bail money... UGH!

Sounds like he had stale donuts that particular AM!  Maybe next time you're out on your bikes you should stop by for some FRESHIES to prevent the next LOUD MOUTH - ummm, PIPE ISSUE!!  Yeah, that's it!  A LOUD PIPE...

Seriously...there's all kinds.  I have run across great officers who had me dead to rights in the wrong as well as JERKS who were just padding their ego.  Being condescending in any situation is just rude!!  Get a grip...   GOOD POST!  Nice to know you vent Kim!

Susie... I have friends and an ex brother in law that are officers.  Each and everyone I have told this story to are appalled even just that fact that there should have been something we were doing wrong to pull us over and then go for the loud pipes.  Whatever!  I hope he went home feeling better about himself if that is what his objective was!  Not all cops are like this yahoo- Thank goodness!

Amen!  I ride my Harley with my shortshot pipes and love the "music" they give off and the safety factor.  ANYONE who says loud pipes don't save lives has never ridden...ever had a Goldwind "sneak" up on you?

Kim, did the officer have a decible meter to check the "excessive noise" of your pipes.   The reason your pipes say For off-road use only is not for noise but for emissions.  The law states decible levels and not loud pipes so I think you have a fightable case here if he did not check the decible level of your bikes.   Just a side note, put a long bolt where your baffles go just in case he tries the night stick test to see if yoy have baffles.

Jeffery....  Amen!  I tried to explain how the music of my pipes has saved my life, but he didn't want to hear it.  In my opinion, our lives were in more danger pulling to the side of a 4 lane highway with a speed limit of 65mph, and even more dangerous trying to get back out into that traffic!

Jeff!  Thank you for the information and the suggestion on the bolt!  I decided to fight this case.  I dont think most people realize that you can fax over your "not guilty" and request a trial. (For Wisconsin) We received our trial date (in February) and can do that via phone.  So we do not even need to drive the 3.5 hrs to fight this case!  I am not backing down on this, I will use the decibel meter argument, along with the state laws that do not have an actual level requirement!

Happy New Year!
