Given the opportunity would you or have you ever served on a board via your local, statewide, or national Association of REALTORS®?  It's a tremendous opportunity and the Associations are always begging for great REALTORS® like you to become involved.  Too many people stand back and say 'naw, let the other guy do it', or 'no, thanks...I really don't have the time', or "I don't really think I'm qualified for a position.'

Start off slow, join a committee...it's not a whole lot of time out of your life and besides what better time is there than NOW to do this, business is slower than normal.  Make good use of your time. It's a GREAT opportunity to get involved with the REALTOR® community, to meet REALTORS® you would not have met before, and to give a little something back.

There are tons of opportunities...from president on down.  Don't go in thinking you will be president tomorrow...today's president started low person on the totem pole at one time.  You don't want to be president of NAR you say?  That's ok...a committee is enough and you need to go no further.

Some of the positions that need filling on EVERY local Association of REALTORS® are:

Board Of Directors
BORPAC
Bylaws Committee
Charities Events and Fundraising Committee
Commercial Alliance Board
Education Events Committee
Executive Committee
Faculty Committee
Finance Committee
Forms Committee
Grievance Committee
Housing Opportunity Committee
Investment Committee
MLS Committee
MLS Quality Control Sub Committee
Political Affairs Committee
Professional Standards
Property Management
Public Relations Work Group
Quality of Life
Risk Management
Technology Advisory Group

Every Association is different...so their committees may be different (but probably similar)...I encourage you to give it a try.  I can almost guarantee you won't be sorry.  I was on the Grievance Committee for 3 years, I am currently serving my 2nd year on Professional Standards.  I also served a short time on the Technology Advisory Group.  One Committee at a time is enough for me...when my stint on Professional Standards is done I think I would like to go for Education or Political Affairs.   These were all at the local level...you can move up the ladder and onto state and national levels if you want.  There is something for everyone!

Make a commitment for 2008 - BECOME INVOLVED!

6 Comments on Giving Back A Little of Yourself - JUST DO IT!

Mary, thanks for commenting on my blog post!  I think your challenge is right on.  "Someone else will do it" is the reason Dale and I loaded his houseload of furniture.  He sent out an SOS to 36 men he knows from church.  Because of the way the email went out, each of could see that there were 35 others.  So they excused themselves one by one, quietly, in front of their computers, because "there are so many others to do it..."

Mary-  we ALL need a JUST DO IT attitude!  Although I was a little hesitant, I joined our local LGR committee two years ago.  It's important for everyone to be involved-  even a little bit!  I fully expect to serve on a committee as long as I'm working.

Mary, Altough I am not a Realtor, I think that people don't quite understand how much of an impact positions like these have in organizations like this.  I have always been a fan of being a part of organizations.  good post!

Mary, I can't agree with you more.  I'm dying to be part of our MLS committee, and would love to be on the Professional Standards committee someday, too.  At this point, it's virtually impossible for me, because my "local" association is about 80 miles one way.  I hope to have the opportunity someday.....

Interesting perspective hearing form someone who has done it. You point out exactly what all my objections and shut them down. Sometimes I'm not sure I like you Mary. But, I do love ya! come back to take action...I miss ya!

Mary, great post!  I just signed up for the Charitable Events & Fundraising Committee with our Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors.  Wanted to do more committees but thought I would commit myself to one since it's my first time and see how it goes.  Maybe add another down the road.  I gave this a 5 rating because I think this is very important for us as professionals to get involved.   Thank you!  I am going to blog about this today as well with reference to yours.  Have a fantastic day!
