Hi...the issue of property taxes here in Florida is high profile, as is the issue of affordable insurance for homeowners and small businesses and rental property.  Owners of single family homes are protected by the Save Our Homes tax cap which was voted in in 1992.  But when homeowners leave their SFR to move to another SFR, their taxes on their just-purchased home revert to market level, which can be thousands of dollars.  Some options for tax relief are adding a Super Tax on SFR, and eliminating the SOH tax altogether and increasing the sales tax, which would create as much money as the SOH tax is now eliminating and would be spread evenly among residents and visitors.  Controversy on this subject????  Lots of controversy.  An election in Jan. 2008 will allow residents to vote on what is meant to be a first step in improving the tax situation.  The Realtor board here supports the measure, while some Realtors with years of experience are strongly opposed to it.  Well see.

Hopefully the legislature will actually do something this time around.  They refuse to actually cut taxes by rolling back assessed values and millage.
