It's that time of year that I love the most. Not just because, well, it's the holidays. It's also that time of year when things slow down a little and I go back and visit with my clients from the past year. I get a chance to catch up with them and they get a chance to see that I really am still in business. There are always a few clients that when I knock at the door I quickly ask myself, Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays??
I was inspired to write this little post after reading an article by Nicole Neroulias on the Columbus Dispatch website stating that 44% of Americans think retailers should use generic holiday greetings and that 49% feels that retailers should say Merry Christmas. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/faith_values/stories/2010/12/17/u-s--split-on-merry-christmas.html?sid=101. That's a pretty even split of opinion and seems very indicative of our current political climate. Can we be sensitive to others while still being true to our own beliefs? Can we all just get along?
I say Yes We Can!
If we all can't agree on the religious holiday we are observing this month, we can agree that we are celebrating. When, where and how seem to me to be less important than the fact that we are honoring and celebrating the faiths that give that extra meaning to our lives. The rest is simply details.
So Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Everyone!!!
By the way, when in doubt I go with Merry Christmas. It's true to who I am and they know it. Hey, I brought a gift. -Mickey DiPiero
