Be Wary Of The Messenger

There are many companies and service providers that derive their business directly from our homes. Contractors who build decks, additions or perform repairs, heating and cooling professionals, insulation installers, roofers, electricians, the list seems endless. Most of these businesses would or could be termed specialized. Some require years of training and testing before an individual can ply the trade and others simply require a truck and some tools.

In Connecticut there are no training requirements for contractors or home builders. Because of this the skill and knowledge of each company can be hugely varied. Human nature is to avoid unpleasant tasks, like sitting through a training session, when at all possible. There certainly are exceptions, but as an inspector the times I have found explicit directions on or with equipment that were ignored makes it seem that getting the job done is often preferred over getting the job done right.

A great for instance is the onslaught of infrared cameras into the home services market.  Anyone can buy an IR camera, however the training on its use is completely optional and there are times when it shows.

Infrared image of missing ceiling insulationThe IR image here is of a ceiling AFTER the attic was insulated.

I think they missed a spot.

The purple area is cold as in no or very poorly installed insulation. This wasn't the only spot I found on the ceiling.

The company that did the work had brought in an infrared camera to sell the job to the homeowner. It was fairly clear in speaking with the homeowner the IR guy had a very inexpensive camera and probably never took any training. He did however show them all the bad spots in their home that needed insulation. I also learned he was more sales savvy than tech savvy.

Too bad the company didn't use their sales tool to check their work. They missed, are missing a great opportunity to elevate their company above their competition. Instead they now look like shysters. They may not be, but there is now that perception.

Flashy, high tech tools are able to provide great information to the user, if the user is able to understand and interpret the data clearly and without bias. It is best to be wary of the messenger whose view may be colored.

It is great that you can now help this homeowner go after the company that put in the insulation.  This does not bother me as much as the folks from Terminex getting people to spend thousands of dollars for "mold remediation" after terminex does their "annual inspection".  They now are calling themselves "fungus experts."  Then the homeowners have to have a real Mold person come in and fix the terminex mess and then report that they was no mold in the first place.  Awful...

Jim the thing about infrared pictures is that the color makes them so impressive whether they are saying anything or not :) If some of these CrackerJack guys can't interpret them correctly the consumer is left with how impressive the colors look.

Camera or no camera, the amount of missing insulation in that picture should have been evident to the naked eye.  Good shot James.

Very interesting.  You're right it is a big missed opportunity for them and they ended up looking bad in the process.  And, you and Charles are right on this...it the picture is the lasting impression and can be used for right or wrong.

James,

Your observations on the proper use and how to read this device are most informative. We have an inspector around here who claims he can do soil testing with his infrared camera. Not yet asked for a demo.

Diane, The mold is gold phenomenon seems to know no bounds. Terminex is now doing mold inspections, what next?

Charlie, I have for sometime referred to IR images as the wow factor of the inspection/audit. It's like a beautiful woman who once she opens her mouth you find to have little substance.

Jack, The area would have been difficult to access, but not impossible. Why do a visual when you have an IR camera, it makes no sense.

Debbie, This company is completely missing the boat using the camera to sell jobs. I would sell it as QC device which would certainly impress the potential customer more than showing them where they need insulation.

Steve, Thanks. That's a new one to me. I'd love to see that demo.

Thanks for chatting with me on the subject of IR training... when was it, last year?  We bought a camera and sent one of our guys to a very expensive week-long (?) training course.

So, to my phrase, "sometimes art and sometimes science" you would add "and sometimes crap!"?

Go figure...

Great points Jim. Great post.

The Level 1 and 2 training is very expensive.  That's because there is no alternative for their service, i.e. no competition.

Reuben, My pleasure. Most courses are about a week.
