Are You an Out of Work Realtor? Questions for the Realtor in You

How many Realtors are out of work right now in the USA?

The numbers are going dHow hard are you working at being a Realtorown in most places. The time for amateur Realtors and agents is long gone. If you are not in it to win it, you might as well cover yourself up with a bed sheet. With prices continuing to drop across the US and foreclosures still on the rise, are the only ones working out there, the ones for the banks? Whose buying?

Is work getting easier for Realtors out there?

Probably not. Several years ago there were many new, fresh faces on the scene and pretty much all most had to do was sit in the office and wait for the phone to ring. Those escalation clauses were flying out the window and prices were inflated so high the appraisers couldn't keep up. Now, those same Realtors are probably back to waiting tables or selling cologne at Macy's. Maybe it was a chance for many to go back to school and create a different career for themselves.

How many Realtors have just given up?

If you give up in this business, you don't get paid. You don't get paid, you don't eat. Pretty simple. This is not a base salary type of biz. You gotta work for your supper and work hard! If you give up, you must find something else. This is not a slacker job. You cannot be lazy. One bad experience with you and people will talk. You can't afford bad publicity in this business.

How many Realtors think that it is important to network, network, network?

Those networks could be what's keeping you alive right now. When the phone isn't ringing and you don't have homes to show, are you networking, marketing and advertising yourself or playing Facebook games to pass the time?

How many Realtors are Johnny on the spot or Susie on the spot when they get a phone call that someone wants to buy a home?sold sign for realtors

Let's hope all are like this but many don't even answer their phones. You can't be in a meeting all the time. You must be able to answer your phone at decent hours 90% of the time. If you screen calls you may just loose out on a commission check

What does a Realtor do to advertise his or her services apart from AR blogs of course?

Are you sending mailing about your niche? Your area or neighborhood of expertise? How about recently sold homes in your area? What have you done that's so amazing, that others will be terrified not to use you! "I want them so scared to miss it.... " Your little Christmas "Scrooged" montage for ya!

I would think that with the glut of houses on the market out there and with foreclosures and short sales galore, that Realtors would be busy. Why do I hear of Realtors having a difficult time?

there are a lot of Realtors who do not have a "hard work" ethic. They expect the business to come to them. They take off weekends and don't take calls past 6pm at night. This Realtor is not going to stay in business and that is fine by me.

HA! Ellie, I know what you mean.. take out the competition. When I was an agent, I had to work really hard and then I still didn't feel I was doing enough. It's a tough business and the successful ones out there are that way for a reason.

I just got me a Realtor who sent me over 4 foreclosures to go look at.  She was right on spot and on top of everything.  So, over the next couple of days I will go take a look at the homes and figure out home much work needs to be done on them and make an offer.  My goal is to have 1 rental and work my way up to 5.  She tells me that by March 2011 that we will have more than 14,000 more foreclosures in Charlotte, N.C. to pick from.  Wow.

Sarah was very thankful to me for the opportunity for the business whether it was a small house or a big house or even a foreclosure under $50,000.  She said it all added up.

I am also informed that the big homes and more expensive homes are taking years to sell.

Anyway, I am looking forward to working with her.  I did not get her from Active Rain by the way.

Very interesting questions David!  I think anyone who expects the work to just come to them will not have much work to do.  Good luck with the investment!  Maybe you can convince Sarah to come to Active Rain so we can "meet" her.  She is right - big or small, it all adds up.
