Great Tips for Choosing Homeowners Insurance

Everyone needs homeowners insurance.  Whether you've just bought your first house or need to change your existing homeowners policy, I have found some great tips to help you choose your homeowners insurance.

Dismiss the Advertising Fluff

When you buy a new home, you'll see more solicitations than anyone else for homeowners insurance.  Many mailings you receive will boast fancy packaging and photos of the ideal home.  These advertisements are often printed on fancy paper stock with poetic writing to help lure you in.  However, just because an insurance company has funds for a large advertising budget doesn't mean they are the best choice.  Chances are, you may do better with a company that never sends solicitation mailings.  Just remember not to go with the first advertisement you see.  Do your own research for what will fit your needs best.

Use Your State's Resources

There are many national insurance companies to choose from, which can be daunting.  Therefore, it is a good idea to start with your state.  You can find what companies are in your state by going through your local chamber of commerce, local phone directory or searching for local companies.  Using an insurance carrier that is within your state will help you if you ever have issues with weather, zoning and home wear.

Get the Right Coverage

Make sure the coverage you get is appropriate for you.  Just because the insurance company may have a good reputation doesn't always mean they are ideal for you.  Check all the details of what the insurance company offers and what they focus on.  Additionally, make sure their strong points match your needs for your geographical area.

Get Familiar With the Claim Process

Some companies will advertise that you can make frequent claims for small repairs, but many of those insurance companies will raise your premium when you do.  Therefore, be weary of these statements.  You will need to know how your policy will be affected when you do have to file a claim for a catastrophe.

Know Your Home

You should know your home's condition to effectively choose homeowners insurance.  If you have a roof that is prone to leak or is not in great shape, you will obviously want to avoid policies that don't cover this type of claim.  To best learn your home's condition, get a home inspection.  The home inspector will be able to tell you most every default with the home.

With these helpful tips, you should be able to find the perfect homeowners insurance policy for you and your home.
