LEARNING IN ACTION—EVERY EXPERIENCE COUNTS!

Education equals experience in business. Amassing knowledge is only the first step. Putting it into practice is what will keep you alive. And EVERY experience in life—good and bad—is a golden learning opportunity.

If you crash and burn, make time to do an autopsy on what happened, dissecting every step all the way from the beginning. Almost always there is something that could have been done better. What went wrong? How could you have done it differently? What fell through the cracks? What got overlooked or stressed too heavily? What would you change if you had the chance to do it over?

Same goes for successes—take time to evaluate why it worked and how to make it work repeatedly and consistently from now on. Revisit every step and look for ways to make it even better than great next time.

Even a job at McDonalds—one that most people consider a “dead end job”—will teach you about at least a dozen business functions: systems, marketing, organization, customer relationship management, problem-solving, teamwork, inventory control, branding, the list goes on and on. Even if the only lesson you learn is that you’re not cut out for food service, that’s still valuable information, better learned sooner than later.

Learning through experience is the best way to learn, by taking the time to reflect and analyze what went down. And how. And why. I’m the first one to admit that I have failed many times and made many mistakes. I wrote the book IN THE TRENCHES, to help YOU avoid those mistakes. That’s where the big learning comes from, right there. Learning comes from how you handle failing.

A deal might not have closed, or maybe a transaction failed to go the way everybody involved expected it to go. But about 95% of the time, there is something you could have done that would have made it work better. But there is still the 5% of the time that even doing every possible thing right won’t make it play out the way you want it to. When that happens, and when you can honestly say you did everything within your control you could have done—let it go and move on. Might not be easy, but let it go.
Leave it where it fell, knock the dirt off your back, and rise to meet the next adventure.

There's Always A Reason To Smile.
