Yesterday I posted a quick note about the increase in pink slips in the mortgage biz.  See here. Today it keeps coming, whith WaMu reportedly cutting 1,000 jobs and "eliminating its sales force dedicated to mortgage borrowers with questionable credit..."  See this article.  This comes on the heels of WaMu terminating its warehouse business and a report from the National Mortgage News that 124,000 loan reps are likely to lose their jobs and 18,000 (yes, 18 THOUSAND) brokerages will be shut down by middle of next year!

This is not a surprise.  I see many places still doing the same thing they did 6 months ago to get business, and take on more sales force to hit the phones.  I can not tell you how many people I talk to that do not understand loans and they work in the industry.

It is the cutting back so we can grow.  Part of me is sad to see people out of jobs, but on the other hand I was told yesterday by a guy that it was because of them laying off so many people that their company is now back in the game and adding news loan programs.

I hope it will balance out and we all need to help people when we can.

Dave,

I don't think we would see the same numbers if the market was as strong as it was 2 years ago.  I'm sure it's a horrible feeling to lose a job, especially when you didn't see it coming.  But this will also weed out some of the weeker and make room for more growth, as you point out.  What really is hard for some folks to swallow is seeing layoffs at Countrywide whene the Mr. Mozilo raked in $160.14Million over the last 5 years (only a measly $68.95 last year).  See http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/12/7G33.html.  Sure he earned it...he created a monumental company and employed a lot of people for good pay.  It's just when people see 12,000 layoffs and look at the CEO's compensation, it's hard for some to swallow.  Hmmm...not sure how I got off track on that one.  Anyway, Always appreciate your comments!

Not only are many of the major players laying off thousands of employees but there are some new layoff methods being employed.  Family First Mortgage Corp just laid off about 40 net branch managers and their employees according to one of the still employed managers.  They cut off your access to company software and then when you call in they forward your phone call to a voicemail that tells you if you're listening to this voicemail then you are terminated.  Somewhere between 40 and 200 laid off employees were dealt with quickly and with low tech technology.   I wonder what happens to all that business in their pipeline, the cash balances left in their branch accounts that the employees don't have access to, the expensive leases for equipment, office and store front space.  Why can't a company have some basic common decency when dealing with the lives of their employees and their families.  It is most cruel for a company to wait until a few weeks before the Holidays to burn their employees, but even more so to do it in such an inhumane , cold hearted and cowardly way.  When they decided to name the company Family First they obviously meant their family, not your family.

James, what a horrible situation, and a really crappy way to let someone go.  I can understand the business side of things, but the HUMAN side is extremely important and should be a top priority, even when making difficult cuts like this.  Thanks for sharing this info.  I guess there are benefits to "owning" your own business.
