Thanksgiving is for turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings. After weeks of shopping and crowded stores, some people aren't in the mood for firing up the oven to cook that honey glazed ham, or turkey they just had last month. Or perhaps you are traveling. Either way, here is a list of Austin area restaurants that will be open on Christmas Day, and a few of my thoughts/comments.
Driskill Hotel - brunch on Mezannine Level - Austins most famous hotel. I never had a bad meal there. Chinatown on Mopac El Arroyo - The most famous sign in town, and great drinks too. Green Pastures - Go check out the peacocks on the back lawn. Always a fun stop. Katz's Deli- Their saying is Katz's never closes. Well it is in January. Here's your chance to eat at this landmark before the open sign goes dark. Liberty Tavern Luby's on Steck - Down the street from my office. Nothing says Texas cafeteria style like Luby's Manny Hattan's - The restaurant that just keeps sticking around. A little New York style in Austin McCormick and Schmick's at the Domain - A chain restaurant. But they only have a freezer big enough for dessert. Fresh food, great service and lots of variety. Shanghai Southwest Bistro at Hyatt Regency Threadgill's - An Austin icon for 77 years. Trio - Yes, it's a hotel restaurant, but in the Four Seasons. Trio is easily one of the best five dining experiences in the city. The Mac n Cheese truffle should be illegal
