As I'm sure you've all experienced, the less than satisfying use and performance of home based wifi systems.  Wall density, metal, lead based paint and other electrical systems all impact the quality of wifi within a residential structure.  Location of the the router can enhance performance, but even with the most expensive and highly rated components, its still difficult to obtain quality, consistent performance throughout a home.

Great post and excellent explanation.  My upgrading my laptop computer helped A LOT......it was that or getting a booster.  Residents of highrise buildings with metal studs may well have more of a problem than residents of homes with wood studs
