What is there to do in Franklin, NC?

Franklin, NC has a lot to offer and you should never be bored around here.  After all we have the whole Great Smoky Mountains to play in.  Here are a few of the local favorite things to do in Franklin, NC.

Franklin, NC

Hiking the Appalachian Trail is very difficult but if your like me I look for the shorter hiking trails.  There is just something about being outside and feeling closer to God.  There are many trails here in Franklin but  Here are 4 of the best hiking trails in the mountains in Franklin, NC.  Be sure to let someone know when you will be back and where you are going.

Whitewater rafting is a ton of fun and the whole family can enjoy this activity.  One of the most popular places to go is the Nantahala River. From Franklin (about 1 hour) and North Georgia take US 441 North to Hwy 74 W. We're about 10 minutes past Bryson City on Hwy 74. About 8 miles past Bryson City the road forks, take the left fork (which is still Hwy 74 W toward Murphy). Blue Ridge Outing Company's Nantahala Rafting Center and Park is on the right about 2 ½ miles past the split. Look for the "USA Raft" sign on the right. Our Nantahala Outpost is about 1 hour from Franklin.River in NC

Gem Mining is still a popular fun thing to do.  Franklin, NC is know for being the "GEM CAPITAL OF THE WORLD"!  That right the world.  There are still many Gem mines open and tourist still flock to them.  You will get wet, muddy and maybe even lucky. The "3 c's" of gem mining are Color, Clarity and Crystals.  Click here for a map of the mines around Franklin, NC.

Years ago my daughter found a 9 carat ruby in Franklin.  We had it cut down to a 3.5 carat ring and 4 carat pendent for a a necklace.  She was very young, but what a treasure we found there in your neck of the woods.  We need to get back up that way again sometime.  I had an Aunt and Uncle that used to spend summers in the mountain somewhere near there... and winters in Florida... we visited every summer.

June, Franklin sound like a dangerous place for me to be.  First I used to do a lot of white water rafting up in Wisconsin  and when I was younger I could get myself out of predicemants in the rapids that might not be so easy now and second...I would probably never leave the gem mines!  There's something in my nature that reminds me of the old prospectors that kept mining or panning for gold...waiting to strike it rich...would you come visit me every now and then at the mine??

Nick ~ Of course I would come visit you!  I'd join you on the panning but I don't know about the rapids.  I definitely would go hiking, that is fun!  When they have the Big Gem shows here I have to be careful because I love jewelry.
