Q: What is Chinese Drywall? Is it really THAT bad?

A: Drywall, is the material builders use that creates the walls and ceilings in your home.  It is commonly called drywall, wallboard, or sheetrock.  Those of you have been doing business in Florida, Texas, and Louisianna have heard all of the horror stories about chinese drywall.  The complaints of bloody noses, sinus infections and vomiting spells for pets and people; the corrosion and blackening of copper tubing and wiring; and “rotten egg” smell to name a few.  And while we are on that subject, do you know what it is in the chinese drywall that makes it toxic?  Well, the official description is an organic compound which releases sulpher gasses that has been determined to be invertebrate fecal pellets.  Or in other words…..CRAB POOP!!!! All together now…EWWW!

Since we don’t know the full ramifications on the homes, OR the people who have been exposed for years to come. So...Is it THAT bad????  The short answer is...noone really knows....YET!  But then again, back in the 50's did we know the red m&m's caused cancer?????  My suggestion, is that IF you are looking at a home in FL that was built between 2004 and today (YES, Virginia, TODAY...we'll get to that in a minute) you or your agent should be demanding a Chinese Drywall Disclosure!!  Below are just 3 reasons why...

1. As I mentiontioned…we simply don’t know what those toxins can do, overtime when absorbed into the human body

2. If your buyer finds out AFTER closing there is chinese drywall in thier home, YOU may be held liable (there is a form, available you know….)

3. And, THIS is MOST scarry.  There is NO LAW currently on the books, at least here in Florida, forbidding contractors (think remodels/flips), or builders (YEP, you read it right Virginia…BUILDERS) from continuing to use the toxic drywall.  INFACT, there was a law that went to Talahassee in 2009 to OUTLAW chinese drywall making it ILLEGAL to use it, IT WAS STOPPED IN IT’S TRACKS!  Since it was NEVER written into law, would you like to GUESS what groups LOBBIED against it, because they already have warehouses FULL of it, and they are loosing $MILLIONS$ because of the housing collapse??!!?? HMMMM????!!!???
