Will that new bathroom payoff?

Are you looking at your kitchen thinking it's time to remodel, but wondering if you'll get the value back out of it down the road?  Or, the bathrooms, perhaps?  What about adding a new bedroom or family room?  Surely, they have to be worth the bucks you put into it, right?

Each year, Remodeling magazine publishes a remodeling cost versus value report to answer just those kind of questions.  The report details average remodeling cost for 35 common home projects, such as entry door replacement, minor/major kitchen remodeling, window replacement, various room additions and more.  The report is segregated by region so the numbers are more accurate for a given location and also is sorted into midrange versus upscale projects.

In brief, here's what the report says for the San Francisco Bay area.  Replacing your entry door could net you 131% returned value against project cost while that major kitchen remodel my only give back 95% of what you put into it.  Your bathrooms may be a better target for your remodeling dollars, returning almost 102% value vs. cost.  What fairs the worst according to the report?  Adding a backup power generator or adding a home office.
