An Ode to the Elfa Closet System. Closet space in San Francisco is a premium because Victorians didn't have much in the way of clothes and what they did have they preferred to store in armoires. My latest buyer can only fit her current season's clothes inside her house. The rest has to go in the basement.
Because our closets run tiny and shallow, San Francisco Realtors salivate over closet organizer systems. Anything that can make our clients' teenie-weenie storage spaces just a tad more functional us a selling point. We also know more about closet systems that your average Joe because we look at them all the time.
Having seen just about every brand available, I believe The Container Store's Elfa system reigns supreme. Elfa gets consistently better reviews than California Closets or the folks at Closet World (who might as well be called Closet Clowns-- don't get me started), because the components are more reasonably priced, less damaging to walls, more flexible, and allow for a few inches of extra storage because the units are suspended from the ceiling.
I used think the Elfa system was ugly because of the open mesh drawers-- they looked like little grocery carts to me. But they've grown on me over time and now they have a finer wire mesh drawer option that looks more like a colander than a grocery cart (I think this is an improvement). Plus, when you think about it the mesh is more practical because you get to see what's in the drawers before you open them.
I'm even more enthused about Elfa these days because a giant billboard next to the I-80 told me that The Container Store not only sells but INSTALLS their Elfa Closet Systems. I am not handy so this item of information is highly meaningful to me.
I researched user experiences with the Elfa System online this morning and am hard-pressed to find anyone saying anything bad about them. I also learned that right now there's a 30% off sale on Elfa components AND the installation. And no-- I was not paid to say this.
