An Ode to Elfa

An Ode to the Elfa Closet System. Closet space in San Francisco is a premium because Victorians didn't have much in the way of clothes and what they did have they preferred to store in armoires. My latest buyer can only fit her current season's clothes inside her house. The rest has to go in the basement.

Because our closets run tiny and shallow, San Francisco Realtors salivate over closet organizer systems.  Anything that can make our clients' teenie-weenie storage spaces just a tad more functional us a selling point.  We also know more about closet systems that your average Joe because we look at them all the time.

Having seen just about every brand available, I believe The Container Store's Elfa system reigns supreme.  Elfa gets consistently better reviews than California Closets or the folks at Closet World (who might as well be called Closet Clowns-- don't get me started), because the components are more reasonably priced, less damaging to walls, more flexible, and allow for a few inches of extra storage because the units are suspended from the ceiling.

I used think the Elfa system was ugly because of the open mesh drawers-- they looked like little grocery carts to me. But they've grown on me over time and now they have a finer wire mesh drawer option that looks more like a colander than a grocery cart (I think this is an improvement). Plus, when you think about it the mesh is more practical because you get to see what's in the drawers before you open them.

I'm even more enthused about Elfa these days because a giant billboard next to the I-80 told me that The Container Store not only sells but INSTALLS their Elfa Closet Systems. I am not handy so this item of information is highly meaningful to me.

I researched user experiences with the Elfa System online this morning and am hard-pressed to find anyone saying anything bad about them. I also learned that right now there's a 30% off sale on Elfa components AND the installation. And no-- I was not paid to say this.

Hi Cece~  I have never heard of them.  This is perfect timing for me since we are building a living quarters at our farm.  I wonder if they do business in KY?

Cece: I am definitely dreaming of a new closet system--although I am not sure it is in my future.

Cece:  I have been a fan of the Container Store and their various brands of shelving for years.  And what an incredibly helpful staff they have.

Elfa systems are fantastic Cece. The Container Store is one of my wife's favorite locations. Her craft room is outfitted with one and our daughter has a great closet system. If you do not opt for installation they are very easy to assemble and install.

OK Kids... I just looked it up.  Here is a link to The Container Store .  And... right now they are having an Elfa sale... 30% off.  Click on the link... and then up at the top and a tad to the right... there is a link to find their locations.  I personally recommend them.

What a timely post, my long time friend is looking into re-doing her closets.  I called her right away.  I have always like the Container Store but had no idea their closet systems were superior.  You never know when you sign on what you will learn.

Liz-- You're right! You never know what you'll find when you sign in. I thought this post would actually be a tad dorky, but the topic is clearly meaningful to some. Who knew closet organizing could be such a turn-on!

Cece:  I guess that just shows that there are more "closeted" Realtors than you anticipated.  <dorky smile>

@Liz:  If you can make it to one of the Container Stores... they have on display examples of just about ALL of the different types of their closet lines.  It really helps being able to see this stuff right in front of you.

Cece,

I once dated a very bright and organized, young lady. She is in corporate management for The Container Store. Always thought that was a perfect job for her. And I'm sure she's coming up with stuff like the Elfa System
