Would you treat your child like this? "Dark Side of David" - Spring of 2011

Here is a short chapter to ‘Dark Side of David’ – (New Book) coming out Spring 2011

Chapter 1

David can feel the crisp breeze from his window slightly blowing his light brown hair. He is lying in his
bed staring at the ceiling. The thoughts racing through his mind are a constant torment; his palms are
clammy and beads of sweat are dripping from his forehead. Is he normal? Are the things that have
happened to him in his life normal? Is it normal to feel the cravings that he feels? It is such a basic part
of him, but he dare not ask anyone else about it. No one can ever know what he is feeling inside, at least
not now. Desperate for answers, David decides to do what he doesn’t want to do; David decides to
examine his past.
Deep in thought, he drifts back to a day when he was just four years old. He has never forgotten that
day; it was one of his happiest and one of his most confusing. It is the day his parents took him to the
circus for the first time. It is also the day that his sister, Jill, told him what his mother had done to him.
Jill is four years older than David and even at this early age, she was always out and about in the
neighborhood. Sam, his brother, was just a baby. No matter how hard he would try, David never felt like
he fit in. Jill was out with her friends every day and Sam took up most of their mother’s attention, so
David was left to occupy himself. Most of the time it seemed to David as if he didn’t exist; when he
would speak to his mother she would often walk by him as if she didn’t hear him. She would forget to
feed him. Other times she would yell at him for reasons he couldn’t understand.
For some reason Jill was home this afternoon. He can still hear her voice in his head. Their mother was
never happy, at least not with David. Jill told David the room their mother put him in when she couldn’t
control him was not his “special room”, it was a closet. She’d put him in there since he was a baby,
whenever she didn’t want to, or couldn’t, deal with him. She told him that even as a baby their mother
used to hit him or knock him down. After locking him in the dark closet, she would say it was his fault
because he was bad.
David takes a deep breath and shakes his head quickly, trying to erase this memory. He doesn’t want to
think about that, he wants to think about the Circus, just the Circus. He calms himself down and starts
thinking about the people, the rides, the sounds; it is all sweet music to his ears. He can still see it as if it
were yesterday, even though it was nine years ago. He can remember the feeling of excitement as he
waited for his father to get home, it felt as if he would burst.
After Jill went out to play, David was sitting on the floor in the living room, drawing and painting
pictures. When his mother came in and sat on the couch near him, he looked at her with love in his
eyes; maybe Jill had been lying, after all. “What do you have there,” said his mother, with no expression
on her face.
“Pictures of people, wanna see mommy?” he happily stated, grabbing up the pages. He went to the
couch and sat down, proudly handing all of them to her. “You like them?”
Her eyes were glued to the pictures; she could not understand why he drew these things. He never had
temper tantrums or violent outbursts, yet he always drew dark, cold figures. She thought there was
something underneath the surface that hadn’t revealed its ugly head, and that made her very distant
with David. “Why in the hell do you draw like this? Huh?” she said, bitterly throwing the papers outward
to float in the air around his head. “This is not what a normal little boy would draw.”
