Noun

horse sense - sound practical judgment

The ability to make good advertising decisions that work and fit within a marketing strategy can make or break even the best of business plans. I am so guilty of doling out money for local advertising that just didn't work this year and yes, I paid for it! And admit the money could have been better spent elsewhere! I didn't have a lick of Horse Sense about me my grandpa would say!

There are salespeople who can make the simplest advertising idea seem like the next biggest sure thing. Meet them on your terms, with no high pressure tactics on their part so that you are able to make a cohesive decision based on the product they offer, not on hype.

Before making any marketing / advertising decisions, be sure to:

Say NO when in doubt
Be smart with money decisions
Go online, check their reputation
Make sure you will be able to track results
Research thoroughly prior to making an investment
Ensure the advertisement coincides with target market
Ask those around you about their experiences with the company (if any)
Avoid the "You have to make a decision now!" scenario, tell them you are not interested

2011 is the year to start fresh, make better business decisons and be more successful than ever! I am so ready!

Wanda, this was a timely read for me as I just posted about needing help in advertising decisions. One thing I don't do however is throw money at it as I can only afford about a quarter.

Bob, I made 2 bad advertising decisions this year that cost over $1000.00. I am usually smarter with my money...could have taken my own advice back then for sure.

Wanda, this sure is a blog post with mighty sound advise! There is a company that keeps calling me, they call 2 or 4 times a day every other day. They just can't get the message that I don't want anything to do with them. Even though I have told them they don't have a good rep. on the net.

Chris, We are constantly bombarded by companies to 'buy in' to their products. I got caught up in a couple of bad decisions myself so I wanted to help someone else avoid the same scenario. You will make some good business decisons this year and we're still here so that accounts for A LOT! 2011 is full of amazing opportunities!
