I see it more and more around here and I JUST DON'T GET IT!!!! Condo and townhome associations that have a strict rule saying PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED!!!! How can you do that??? I mean, if you want to say something like 'pets over 25 pounds are not allowed' - I can understand that! Large dogs need space to get some exercise - to run and move - a townhome or condo where they do not have a backyard to run - ok, this is understandable!

But all medical research shows that people who live alone do better both psychologically and physically if they have a companion.... a pet. Many older people have small dogs or cats. It keeps them well! It lends company! It makes their life complete! To say 'NO PETS' just seems WRONG -

What's your opinion????

Bill & Barbara Jo, I agree it is good for people to have a pet, and when we get older, all the more important.

I think a lot of the HOA and Condo Boards mostly enjoy the power that they have.  I understand the dog rule over 25lbs but no dogs.. What about cats? No with the liter box please  they really can stink up a unit..

It is like anything else in life. If you don't want to follow the rules (right or wrong) don't buy or sell in those Condo's or Townhouses. Why fight the battle or complain about the rules when you can go elsewhere? If the members of the HOA don't want the rule they should get active on board or run for the board and change the rules. I just find it interesting that people want to change things when they can go elsewhere.

There are two sides to this coin, and I can see both of them.

I couldn't live without Bowtie, but she's a 4-lb cat who doesn't make a sound.  She stays indoors, does her business in the box, and keeps my home free of spiders and geckos.  Plus she gives me love, love, love, and I hope she outlives me.

Now, there is a dog 5 or 6 houses down the street who howls frequently on a Friday night.  We figure his owners go partying and forget to bring him in.  I find this unconscionably rude.  Their lawn has "doggy marks" and I periodically find presents in my yard as well.  I grew up with a dog, Spooky, and I loved him then like I love my cat now.  But the space between our houses was huge, and we always brought him in at night.

It's not the pets that make it difficult for others, it's the owners.  The rules should be about restrictions of human behavior, not restrictions disallowing pets.

Matthew - I don't get it; no pets means no cats, no nothing and I don't think it is fair !!!

Candy - Absolutely and medical reports prove it is good for older people!!!

Gaylen - The problem is that more and more condo associations are going that way!!!

Patsy- I agree with you; restrictions on things like having the dog inside at night, picking up or getting fined - those are things I find reasonable!!!
