Change a Family's Life Only $20

"You can change a family's life for only twenty dollars," explained my Sunday School teacher Mrs. Jewell at the Cambrian Park United Methodist Church in San Jose, Calif. where my family worshipped. "Isn't that better than buying or receiving another toy?"
For Santa Clara County children like us who still lived amongst orchards and farms, yet normally received several toys, her pitch was still a bit of a hard sell. However, raising money to support Heifer International was (and is) kind of exciting. Because unlike other charities, Heifer International specialized in shipping LIVE ANIMALS to families in exotic locations worldwide.
In America we tend to think of animals in terms of pets, while in most of the world, they are seen as livestock, labor and/or food.
Heifer International, (also known as The Heifer Project), supplies live animals, training and support to families throughout the world. Best known for sending cows (heifers), they've expanded into water buffalo, camels, bees, an entire "ark" and even gardening.
For $20, you can buy a flock of ducks, a flock of geese or even a share of a llama. Ducks and geese lay eggs, which the family uses for needed protein, and then sells the surplus others in the village. When new chicks are born, they can sell them to their friends and neighbors to get them started on their own entrepreneurial efforts.
