32 Comments on The Wonderful Advantages of Working from Home
Since late October (when my dad got to finally go home from the hospital) I've based my office at their home so I could be close by to help. He is so much stronger and they really don't need me all the time, but I think I'm going to give up my office at the office. Too many distractions there. I've been much more efficient away from there AND able to help my parents too.
Myrl, there are still things I will go to the office for but most of my daily work is done from home. Although cutting down on unnecessary driving has definitely been a priority for me, I'm still surprised by how many miles I actually did spend in the car this year.
With best wishes for a happy and successful New Year!
Hi Myrl, I spend about 10 days a month at the office- more if I'm meeting with clients - but I love the days that I work at home and find I usually get a lot more done.
Hi Myrl, Happy New Year!! The cost of gas is not even going to be measurable compared to some other expenses that will begin skyrocketing as we begin the year. Besides Bush isn't around so most arn't complaining about the cost of gasoline. It is so yesterday, LMAO. Check price of food lately? Every major brand of clothing as gone up at least 10 % this past year. Not to mention the potential for some major new taxes for you guess what for.... So far everything I have looked at has gone up. Price a car lately? -whew! As for the office at home, I could never again be saddled with working in an office situation again. Electric costs went up, but shoe leather and professional laundry costs went down. An even trade off.
Ann - Those capable of working at home, have a great advantage when it comes to caring for elderly parents. I know another Realtor that does it as well. She's successful as an agent, and very successful raising her family, while assisting her aging parents.
Silvia - I have actually closed entire transactions without ever going into the office. I still drive a lot of miles, but not nearly as many as I would without my home office.
Mary - First, let me say I love your new avatar. Everytime one of my friends changes pictures, I feel like I lost an old friend, while gaining a new one. . .LOL
William - I don't think it so much that we don't have Bush to kick around anymore, as it is a symptom of the frog being put in a pot and left to boil. They say a frog won't jump out, because it doesn't realize the heat is going up. He adapts and acclimates - until he is dead:-( I think we humans are a little like that in our own lives. If a family only has so many dollars coming in each month, they will pull dollars from one place to pay for another. Unless there isn't enough dollars to stretch at all. . .Families are different than the federal government:-)
That gasoline is going to escalate in price in the new year...and every year there after...at a rate faster than the price of housing.
It will make long commutes more and more prohibitive.
Jim - I remember when this country was considered to be on the gold standard. I think we have actually been on an oil standard for several decades now. It is amazing that some folks will try to shoot down green energy, until gasoline prices go up. When the price goes down, they become complacent again. We must find a way to be less dependent on foreign oil.
Hi Myrl, Filled up my car in the morning on Monday @ $3.01 a gallon (approx $55 - yes, I was on E ) - later that day the prices rose to $3.17 and $3.19 - will be interesting to see what they are next time !! I think it'll wait until next year. Very well written! Happy New Year!
We worked for a broker who required us to be in the office every morning at 8am for a "meeting" (basically him telling us how to do real estate). It was a 30 min drive to and 30 min drive back from there. We changed offices and work strictly from home-it is wonderful! BTW - love the picture. My grandmother had one of those in her backyard a hundred years ago.
Marilyn - It has been rather shocking, how fast the prices have risen. I hope you have a proseperous New Year!
Toni - I have been fortunate that in my 29 years in this business, I haven't had a broker that demanding. There is the usual weekly meeting, and there are quarterly meetings. Our office has wonderful training available also. But much of it isn't mandatory. And a lot of it is via the web.
Good argument for a home office. I have both and prefer to go to the company office every day. That is where i get to brainstorm with some of the best real estate professionals in the market. And, most of the valuable conversations are unscheduled. You can't chat with a pro in the hallway if you are not there. I certainly do not plan to meet clients at my home.
Roy - I certainly think each of us has found a way we are most comfortable practicing our profession. The very first office I was in, I remained for 10 years until it closed its doors in the 1990s housing recession. We were a very close knit group of Realtors, and I found it heartbreaking when we all moved to 5 different offices in town.
However, I will say that the brainstorming I missed from being in the office each day with all them, I have managed to make up for by being part of the ActiveRain community. When you stop to think about it, the collective tribal knowledge of almost 200,000 members here on ActiveRain is a powerful brainstorming resource.
Happy new year Myrl!
Hi Myrl and Happy New Year. I have done both, worked from home and the office and have been productive and done well from either place. But I must say I enjoy the office the most. I know gas prices are rising but even so I need to get out and preview homes and take photos and learn areas and neighborhoods no matter what the price of gas is at the moment. I must say I have started organizing my trips more closely though. We will see how things shake out this coming year as gas keeps rising. :0)
I don't have a desk at my Midtown Sac office. Gave it up several years ago because I didn't use and felt some other agent could benefit from it. I have everything at home, plus I'm basically mobile and wireless. The only thing I can't do on the road is print but who needs to print? Print is so passé.
Working from is great...Sometimes you can get up at 5 in the morning and work till 10...
Happy new year!
I have to admit, there is nothing better than working from home. I try never to meet clients before 10 am!
