Learning curves---we all have them

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

No matter what your chosen career---there is a learning curve.

In the trades when the boss tells the helper to go do something, the boss may assume that the helper knows more about the details of what he has been asked to do than he actually does.  In some respects this accounts for how so many defects happen in new construction and in newly remodeled homes.  It is not that the contractor doesn’t know the right way to do it---the right way just hasn’t been adequately communicated.

Take this brand new home’s master bathroom shower.

Can light in shower with wrong cover/trim

Any electrical contractor is going to know that the light fixture inside the shower has to have a water tight cover.  But when the contractor leaves instructions for the helper to install all the decorative trims on the can-lights---while he is off skiing for the day---you might end up with the wrong trim installed on the can-light in the shower.

It is a pretty simple fix---and one the helper will not likely forget the next time.  This is of course unless this is not the first time and he ends up getting fired.

Charles - You're right--if there was a licensed electrician doing the work--someone forgot to communicate properly.  And a little common sense should have alerted the workman that the installation might pose a problem. Put another check mark on the reasons buyers need to have ALL homes inspected.

Sometimes, all I can do is just shake my head and wander off to another post.  That's the case here.

Water and electricity together..... You might as well just complete the scene and get in that shower holding a plugged in toaster....Oh, and for good measure, stick a fork in it too!

Not a mistake this electrician will be making again anytime soon.... I hope.

I actually gasped when I saw that photo.  Yikes!  I think I might wonder about the baseline IQ of the person starting on that particular learning curve.

Steve, yes---this is a common place to find all manner of strange fixtures

Don, outside is good---but with some opaque shower curtains additional light is nice

Jay, as you know---flips often don't ever see "real" electricians :)

John, thanks.  I think the vast majority of people would not recognize a problem here.  It is more than the electrical shock hazard.  It is also the old water on hot rocks scenario---nobody wants exploding hot glass to walk on.

Erby, yup---sometimes that is best:)

Craig, I think you find enough crazy ways to photoshop yourself without this one :)

Don, we all like our hair curled don't we?

Kathryn---it does make it easier to change the bulb :)

William, I suspect they know better now.

Shower head in the ceiling. Is the attic above? I see this feature once in a while. Now add that to the light near by and the water tight cover is a moot point.

Recessed lights... ever since I got an IR camera a couple months ago, I've been much less of a fan.  It's crazy how much heat those things give off, even when they're the proper 'airtight' fixtures.

Jim, second story above in this case

Reuben with enough insulation above them in the attic you shouldn't be able to see them very much in an attic with the IR I should think---unless of course it is fiberglass :)

Mr Charles,

I am always amazed at all of the inspection tricks and shortcuts I have been able to teach to you each time I take you out. You are still pretty shaky walking on the cable wires, but you are getting better at walking the larger power company lines. If you get better, I will let you become a member of the "hotdog" club, like me.

Reuben, fiberglass is for making money---not saving money :)

Nutsy, my greatest wish for you this coming year is that some one gets to enjoy you in a bun with lots of catsup and mustard.

Even I know that electricity and water do not mix.  The thing that is surprising is that this made it all the way to a home inspection....where was the building inspectors?

Charlie,

That is one of the rudest comments I have ever seen. You are way too caustic to Nutsy.

Diane, sometimes they might catch this one---they don't spend the kind of time it takes to look at this level of detail.

Steve---are you sure---seemed fine to me :)

When I was an electrical apprentice, let's see here, that was just 19 years ago, we went back and did the trim work. Of course that was included in the bid. I suppose things have changed just a bit to save a buck.
