Raleigh Snow Storm 2010
Raleigh Experiences A White Christmas
Over Christmas weekend, the Raleigh area was blanketed in snow, leading Lt. Governor Walter Dalton and Governor Bev Perdue to declare North Carolina to be in a State of Emergency. Residents in the Raleigh area experienced their first white Christmas in over 60 years.
Snow began to fall in Raleigh and Cary around 8pm, December 25th. By the end of the day, .4 inches of snow had accumulated, tying the current record for the highest amount of Christmas Day snowfall, which was set in 1947.
The total amount of snowfall Raleigh received was about 8.3 inches, the second highest amount of snowfall Raleigh has seen since 1958.
Charlotte received about 5 inches of snow, and areas along the North Carolina cost received up to 7 inches of snow.
The City of Raleigh public works crews were already clearing the Raleigh area roads by 8am on Sunday, December 26, before the snowfall even ended. Crews worked 12-hour shifts to clear and salt the roads.
While many families were able to enjoy the Winter Wonderland, some were also forced to face the downsides of record snowfall.
Airlines canceled hundreds of flights either coming in or out of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport between the 25th and the 29th, with additional flight delays continuing to take place.
Airline cancelations and delays were not limited to North Carolina--all three of New York's major airports were shut down for 24-hours, leaving travelers stranded throughout the Northeast.
