Goal Setting Vs. Business Planning

It's that time of year where people are reflecting on the year gone by, and trying to figure out what they will be doing next year.  They are setting their New Years Resolutions sort of speak, only for their business.

You quite often hear people this time of year state they are doing planning; only to find out they are really setting goals. "What is the difference?" you may ask.

business planGoal A goal is a projected computation of affairs that a person plans or intends to achieve. It is similar to purpose of aim.  A goal is the anticipated result which guides reaction, or an end which is the object.

A plan is typically any procedure used to achieve an objective. It is a set of intended actions, through which one expects to achieve a goal.

In order to do Business Planning, you start with goal setting.  Once you identify the desired outcome, you develop the plan to achieve them.

A goal with out a plan is as useless as a plan with out a goal.  However, when you put the two together, you have a winning tool!!!

Thanks for sharing your definition of setting goals vs doing a business plan.  We must do both to be most effective in accomplishing our objectives.

Thanks for sharing. I create an action plan to achieve my goals, but I focus more on the action than the goal, because that is where I have control.

Pam:

The challenge is for a person to have a business plan that incorporate daily goals, easier said then done. I have seen many business plans just focus on the bottom line, and when that is so necessary, it can be very demotivating,

A great book I am reading that speaks to this subject is Switch by Chip Health & Dan Health.

The plan has action strategies to make your goal turn into a reality.  Great reminder that both go hand in hand.

Measuring the success of your plan is important at achieving your goals, this way you can modify your plans if they are not creating the results to support your goals.

they are so important and to have them written down and visualize is equally important. I believe you have to have a way to measure your progress.
