Starting All Over.......Again!

By
Mortgage and Lending

I remember when I got into this business back in 2003, and everyone used to say "if you make it 2 years you're set for life!" Boy were they ever wrong.

That may have been the way things worked for a few years prior, but little did they know that just a few short years down the road, we would all have to become masters of Starting Over.

Even during the housing boom it was a challenge to get and retain a good client, whether it be an agent or customer, because there was always someone coming out with something new that was easier and faster and cheaper! Starting over from year to year at that point meant constantly meeting with account reps from various new companies that were continuing to enter the marketplace and finding out what Niche Mortgage Product they had to offer.

As the housing market began to change the lending market of course made adjustments as well, and then as everyone knows it took a complete U turn! Once again forcing many of us to Start Over. This time Starting Over meant that you were looking for a new company, or a new job entirely. People that had seen rediculous success in previous years were suddenly unable to make enough money to afford the new house, or the vacation home, or the high end car payment.

Starting over for those of us who still believed that we could make it through this new market meant going backwards back to basics, back to learning our craft. Learning how to be patient while dealing with Bank Owned Properties and Short sales, and learning how to keep a client happy in the process. I'll be the first to admit that it was easy to get lazy during the good times. Something that I don't think many of us will ever allow to happen again.

As I look forward to another year I always enjoy taking a quick look behind me to see where I have been over the last year. Even though many things have become harder, I am still amazed at how lucky I am to be in this business. 2010 has been my best year so far, and none of the other years were bad! So I am going into this new year ready to Start Over, and make it even better!

Great post Abdon.  I started in RE just as the market started its downward spiral so I guess I don't know any better.  I look forward to a more stable market because I know that those of us that survived the current market conditions will flourish when things turn around.

So true Keith... sometimes I think that starting later would have been a little easier. Best of luck in the new year!

I remember hearing the same quote when I started in 1997.  Clearly, that is not the case, huh?

Thanks for this post Abdon! I started in real estate back in 2005 and experienced the "good old days" in my market. I was on my way to becoming another complacent agent when the "down turn" hit in 2007. A terrible year in 2007 forced me to start over in 2008. That strategy worked out so well that I started over at the beginning of 2009 and 2010 and each successive year ended up better than the previous. Change is good. Since 2008 I've spent the months of November and December planning and looking forward to the New Year. I woke up this morning happy and optimistic because I get to start over again.  Happy 2011!

You nailed it! It's not a small issue either. I think all agents and mortgage lenders should be reading Who Moved My Cheese regularly!!!

Abdon, I'm doing the same thing you are. I'm "starting over" in 2011. I think that's the best way to really get a grasp of where we are in business and moving forward from there.

Love the post today, thanks for putting it out to us on AR.  Real estate sure isn't like it was years ago. I've been in it for 25 years and this last year was the wort by far I thought.  With that said, I'm in it for the long haul as they say.  Anything will be better that last year.

It is one big fat reboot, and not for happy reasons. it isn't just us- retirees have in some cases lost their life savings. Strange times.

I agree 100%. Lending is going to take a major about face this year as the market shifts from refi to purchase.  Loan volume declining to less than $1T will probably be offset by a further decline in Loan Officers so there is opportunity for purchase centric Loan Officers.  2011 should be indeed be interesting.

Abdon,

It seems in every industry things have been reset and the old way is no more. I am not sure if its good or bad, but what is certain is change. If you fear change you will have a hard life in real estate. Perhaps the mortgage industry is the same...
