Well, I am sure that the title of the post is a bit confusing as we are from Chesterfield, MO. However, we celebrated New Years with Linda's dad in Ft Myers, Florida. Since we stayed in for New Year's Eve, we decided to step out on New Year’s Day with a little bit of fun. We decided to watch the annual Polar Bear swim off of Tarpon Bay Beach, Florida (a beach on Sanibel Island, FL). Prior to entering the water, a special song was sung that goes like this:
Polar Bear Anthem "God Bless the Polar Bears"
While the storm clouds gather far across the sea
Let us swear allegiance to our club that's free.
Let us all be hopeful for a day with sun,
as we raise our glasses and we have some fun.
God bless the Polar Bears on New Years Day.
Stand beside us and join us to the shore with a roar as we play.
From the uplands, to the marshes, to the Gulf shore filled with ice.
Gold bless the Polar Bears - it sure feels nice,
Gold bless the Polar Bears - we're bears not mice.
Here are some photos of the event.
While a polar bear event in the north is probably a bit more bracing than this, the gulf water temperature was a chilly 55 degrees. For Southwest Florida, that is mighty cold. Normally, the water temperature is closer to 70 degrees. While it was fun to watch, we decided it best not to participate and leave it to the "professionals." Happy New Year everyone!
