Dealing With The Anger - The Senseless Death Of Jack Maguire

By
Home Stager with Sharon Tara Transformations

funeral coverage on tvYesterday was the funeral of Jack Maguire, a police officer from Woburn, Massachusetts, who was killed in the line of duty the day after Christmas.

Jack was 60 years old, scheduled to retire next year.

As I watched the funeral procession on TV, I was in awe...thousands of officers from all over the country marching,  riding motorcycles, and in cruisers with blue lights flashing.

The level of honor and respect shown was immeasurable.

Jack Maguire responded to a robbery.  Both he and one of the robbers were killed in an exchange of gunfire.

Here's the senseless part - the part stirring up anger in everyone who hears the story...

Jack Maguire's killer was parolee Dominic Cinelli.  As a teenager, Cinelli stabbed a man in the chest, He had a lifelong, violent criminal record.  He was sentenced in 1976 to three life sentences. His incarceration history includes over 50 disciplinary reports, including threatening and assaulting corrections officers.

Feeling ANGRY yet?  Oh, it gets better...

In 1985, Cinelli was given a one-day furlough and did not return.  While out, he committed five armed robberies and shot a 60-year-old security guard.  The guard was lucky enough to survive the shooting.

In 1986, less than an hour after sentencing for the 1985 crimes, Cinelli slit his wrist and was taken to the Hospital, where he pulled a fake gun on a deputy sheriff who was guarding him, stole the officer's  handgun, and ran from the hospital in shackles.  He carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint and remained at large for 11 days...committing at least one other robbery.

In 2009, Dominic Cinelli was released on parole by the Massachusetts Parole Board.

Cinelli had told the Parole Board that he was "deeply sorry'' and a "new and different man" and said he was no longer a threat to the public.  Oh, ok...well that explains it...he was sorry.

The Parole Board had failed to notify Middlesex County prosecutors of the hearing that led the panel to free Cinelli.  Had they been notified, the prosecutors would have opposed Cinelli's release, as they had at a parole hearing three years earlier.

How can parole even be an option to someone with a violent history serving three life sentences?

This is the question raising anger over Officer Maguire's senseless death.

Jack Maguire is survived by a wife and three children whose lives will be changed forever.

jack maguire

I can only imagine the anger and pain that they are experiencing.  May God give them the strength they need to survive their loss.

To the seven Parole Board members who unanimously voted to release Cinelli...I can't express what I'm feeling in words.  I would not want to have to live with having made that decision.

To the criminals with upcoming hearings for parole in Massachusetts....probably not going to go your way right now with all the attention on the Board.

To all the politicians who are "appalled" and pointing fingers...too little, too late.

To Boston natives Ben Affleck and Matt Damon...I smell a movie.

Sharon: How tragic....There is such a brotherhood between the police officers... many  having former military backgrounds, and enjoying that same brotherhood in the police force. When a friend's husband died in a  motor cycle accident, being a retired police officer, his funeral was attended by so many police officers and was an event one celebrating his life. It was so touching.... That said, it never ceases to amaze me how criminals can be released when the writing is on the wall... What of the psychiatrist's report also? WHat was he thinking....   Gay

Sharon....wow what a heartbreaking story and one that could have been written so differently if the Parole Board had been doing the right thing!  Hopefully it will open some eyes/minds for future cases with similar backgrounds.

On the flip side....I saw a story of 2 sisters who were given Life sentences for an armed robbery in Mississippi which they stole $11 when they were in their early 20's.  They are now.....16 years later....being considered for release because one needs a kidney and the other will be the donor.  Not sure what the RIGHT answer is but seems that the prison system needs attention everywhere!

THANKS for the post....keeps all of us thinking!

Pam:  Something is so wrong with the system to have allowed this.  Thanks for commenting.

Gay:  There is a true brotherhood and it is inspiring to see the large numbers there to pay tribute to their brother.

Kathy:  I know there are mistakes made on both sides of the issue.  Neither is acceptable.  The system does need work.  Hopefully this tragedy will bring the needed attention to get something done.

Sharon- I'm glad that you put into words what so many feel.  And, we do have to speak up when something like this happens.  My brother, young cousin and nephew are on the force in Houston.  The police do their job.... now the parole boards, courts and politicians need to do theirs.

Kathy:  They do seem to run in families, don't they, LOL!  Jack's father was the Chief of Police.  My husband's uncle was an officer in Lowell Mass and my husband took the test when he was young...passesd and his family was so proud.  I talked him out of going that path because it scared me.  It's not an easy life for the family.  I hope this brings much needed attention to the problems at hand and other lives are not lost.

Hi Sharon - It's so hard to understand how anyone could look at that criminal record and not want to make sure he was locked away forever. My heart goes out to Jack Maguire's family.

Unfortunately, because of the Holidays, I do not believe this headline and death brought enough attention to the public. We should be talking about this for another month, at least. This is so sad that someone had to pay the ultimate price because of some board members who were most likely in a hurry to go somewhere else!

I wish you Sharon a happy, healthy and safe new year!

What a tragedy, Sharon. I keep trying to remember when everything turned around and the criminal had more rights that the victims; it seems like the people in charge either don't care anymore or are afraid to be tough.

Sharon,

Thank you for posting this story for the AR community. Although it is a "local" story, it highlights the fact that in every part of this country, there is a need to keep the lights turned up on our politicians and parole boards so this horrible tragedy is not repeated. I hope the media stays on this story for as long as possible. I can only offer my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and associates.

What a horrible tragedy for the family and community. Our justice system is upside down. We hope that eyes and minds will be opened to the things that need to change for innocent people to be safe. A heartbreaking outcome that hopefully will save others from the pain and loss of the Maguire family, friends and community by changes taking place in our broken system.

Judy:  Well thank you for that compliment!

Ellen:  It does happen too often...those cases that just make you wonder how it could possibly happen.

Judy:  Who knows what was going on at that time, and what the motivation was.  It just doesn't make sense now.

Laura:  My heart goes out to them too.  I'm not sure how they are supposed to cope.

Lydie:  The services were covered on TV in great detail, which is good.  It was hard to watch and not get emotional.  Let's hope even more attention is brought to the fact that something very wrong happened here.

John:  Well said!  Thank you.

Lee & Carol:  I only hope that enough attention comes from this, that Jack's death is not for nothing and we see changes in the system that prevent this from happening to any other family.

Roger:  Thank you.  I believe things happen for a reason, but in this case it is so hard to comprehend such a loss.

Toni:  The reasons that are given for cases being dismissed or criminals getting away with murder are sometimes so insane.
