When Do You Hit 'Unsubscribe'?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty - Atlantic Shore

So this bug's gotten hold of me...the in with the new and out with the old thing!  Participating in a challenge last month got to me clean up my files, my desk and my systems in an effort to make 2011 a better more focused year.

I now have a dilemma.  In this cleaning up and better organization frenzy, I've looked at my ActiveRain blog subscriptions.  I have at least ten subscriptions where there have been no new posts in over a year!
questions -sxc Chris Baker

What to do?  What do you do?

I don't want to just 'unsubscribe', that sounds so cold.  And if I was away for a while, I'd hate to come back and find my friends had abandoned me!

email - sxc Sigurd Decroos So, this month I'm going to email all of the blog writers on my blog subscription list.

If they haven't posted in a while, I'll tell them I miss the daily, weekly or sometimes monthly interactions.  If they're still actively active in the Rain (I like that, actively active), I'll tell them that though I might not always comment, I do always read!

This January activity is inspired by Kimberly Norgard, from the Hamptons (NY), who emailed me in December and thanked me for subscribing to her blog!  She asked if there were anything in particular I'd like to read about in her blog or anything I'd like to know about the Hamptons. That little email had a great impact!

Thanks Kimberly, for blog fodder and a great outreach plan!

Laura, I think it is a good idea notifying the people who you have subscribed. If they don't respond, I would agree to unsubscribe them.

Sometimes I've emailed first, Laura, but there are lots of reasons I use the unsubscribe. Attitude or focus can change so that I may not seek out those blogs anymore.

Laura:  That's a very nice idea to reach out & reconnect of sorts. There are a few that have totally disappeared & I just unsubscribe.  I have left groups last year because there is no leader at the helm & the same featured posts have been there for 2 years.  Not very updated is it?

Have a prosperous & healthy 2011.

About 1/3 of my subscribers don't post here anymore. I should do something, but I keep thinking they will come back as a few have.

I hit the unsubscribe button when it turns out that the poster is  a "know it all" who in reality knows very little and just likes either seeing their words of wisdom in print or is out for points only.

If they haven't posted in a year, they have really unsubsribed from YOU!  I'd have no trouble hitting that button . . .

I help brokers build businesses they love.

If it was a writer you enjoyed you could also google the name to see if they are posting on another site. Some people are regularly posting on their wp or FB sites and dropped AR.

I know that there are a bunch on my list that aren't active here anymore, but I haven't felt the need to remove them.  However, on Facebook, I have some serious cleaning to do.  :)

Hi Laura - I don't actively manage my subscriptions, but like your idea on reconnecting. And even if someone is no longer involved in real estate, they can still be a valuable online connection.

Like Jason above, I too have many folks on my list that haven't been active for some time. But I've not unsubscribed. Perhaps your suggestion of emailing them is in order.

Laura- I don't think I've ever unsubscribed from someone but I do admit my list is long.  I do like your idea of thanking people for subscribing to your blog.  Good post!

Sometimes when they come back they come back better than ever.  I have a few people that only seem to post every 6 months but it is good stuff and worth reading.  When they pop up near the top of my list I pay attention.  If you want to keep subscription number small though you'll have to cut them.  I think I subscribe to about 50.

Kinda depends on who it is but I mostyly stay subscribed even when they have not posted anything  in a over a year, two years, probably going on three years for some. If they post again I want to know about it.

The rest of the time their cute little avatar is down there on the bottom of the list.

To me Kimberly's mass email through ActiveRain felt the same as Direct Message spam on Twitter does and I unsubscribed from her blog because of it.  There's a different feel to a personal email than there is to something promoting your blog / tweets / facebook fan page.  To me her email was promoting something I was already subscribed to. Usually when I get the Twitter DM saying " thanks for the follow, lets be friends on Facebook" or "thanks for the follow here's my website" I unsubscribe...

My subscription list is long.

Thanks all for stopping by...I'm having some problems with proxy errors since last night, but I enjoyed reading your comments.

Jason I never thought about Facebook, another task!

Maureen - I don't go that far, but I am considering unsubscribing to those Twits that text me!
