Yearly Resolutions are Worthless

Reblogger Dawn Crawley

We have all been talking about the New Year and what each of us plans to do for our personal and business goals. Below is a very important bit of information that we sometimes overlook. And that is longer range planning and assessing what has happened more than just last year, but the last several years.

Happy New Year!  Today we are waking up from a long night of partying and ringing in the new year.  Can you believe it?  It's 2011.  Wow!

It's our custom to think about and set new year resolutions for ourselves.  Some examples are:  I need to lose 10 lbs, stop smoking, start exercising on a regular basis, get to work everyday by 9am at the latest, be a better Mother, be a better Father, save more money for the college fund, or just be happy.

I was chatting with my wife today and she suggested we need to look out 10 years with our resolutions and goals.  And I thought to myself this is a great idea.

I look back 10 years ago from where I was to where I am today:  I got married in the past decade, we had two daughters, I changed careers from Corporate Sales into Real Estate, we bought and renovated our current house, and we traveled a bit but not enough.

So today I am going to take the time and effort to put together a 10 year resolution plan for myself.  Where do I see myself in 10 years?  How will my career path go?  What special projects will I have accomplished by then?  Travel?  Personal Development?  Personal enlightenment?  Health Goals?   Which college will my oldest daughter be attending in 2021?

Pretty big questions, but worthwhile for me consider this New Year's Weekend.

Happy New Year to all of you!

I think that is a good idea.  but I would call them goals rather than resolutions.  Resolutions are too easily forgotten.

Dawn:  I have decided that my New Year's Resolution is that I am NOT going to make any New Year's Resolutions.  Ooops... well, that didn't last very long.  Darn !

Ten years sounds great.  Perhaps One Day At A Time might be better for some.
