Can we re-blog AR posts on our other blogs, or should we get separate permission for that?
I re-blogged an AR post today that I think is a really good one for the public. But my WordPress blog (AboutArvada.com) actually gets more hits than my AR blog. So I'd like to put it on there too, with full acknowledgement of source.
In this case, I will ask specific permission to do that first, but I'm wondering if that's really necessary, if the author has already clicked the 'Allow others to re-blog this post' button.
What do you think?
For those who don't know, re-blogging an AR post is really easy, if the author has allowed it. Say you're reading a post you really click with, and you'd like to help spread it around to those who read you. In the upper right corner you'll see a green 'Re-blog' button. Click that, and a new post is created.
You need to add a few lines of comments at the beginning of the post, just what your thoughts are, why you're re-blogging it. Maybe it was even a post you disagreed with, and you want to respectfully get your opinion out there.
Then, click 'Post Blog Entry' as usual.
Some people advise going back and editing the post, so you can add your own footer, tags, etc. I think that's a good idea, but don't delete any of the original author's information.
If you're wondering how to give permission for your post to be re-blogged, simply make sure the box 'Allow others to re-blog this post'. It is automatically checked on mine, probably for evryone's, so I have to actually make sure to un-check it if I don't want something re-blogged. BTW - if you are not a Rainmaker, your posts are Members Only and can't be re-blogged.

4 Comments on Question for Fellow Active Rain Bloggers - About Re-blogging Posts
I'm not an attorney, but below is my understanding.
My thought would be that it isn't permitted. Permitting reblogs within the ActiveRain platform is one thing. Posting another writers' content to your private blog would, I believe, violate their copyright. Of course, if you get the writer's permission, you can do anything agreed. You'll probably want to disclose that it's "Content published by permission of ____________".
Of course, you can always publish a "snippet", 3-4 lines of a post and then link to the full post on the original platform/web site.. That's permissible under copyright law.
Lenn, that makes perfect sense. I like the snippet idea too with a link back to the original post!
Dawn, You have gotten the perfect answer from our own ActiveRain expert. Good question to ask first!
