Life Goals, lists and 43 Things…

An article in today’s Toronto Star has a small article about putting your “life list” down on paper so that you commit to fulfilling your dreams.

Now, lists featuring your goals are nothing new. Life lists are just today’s jargon for goal setting. Years ago Oprah used this concept to create her “Top forty by forty” list and inspired many people to build their own list, commit it to paper and then fulfill their dreams.

On this season of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she too is encouraging viewers and celebrities to create their own lists to fulfill.

Believe it or not, there is even a website dedicated to building your list. 43things.com poses the question “What do you want to do with your life?”. The website helps you to “discover what’s important, make it happen, and share your progress”.

Ironically, yesterday I caught a rare opportunity to watch a movie, Last Holiday. The movie is based around Georgia Byrd (played by Queen Latifah), a store clerk who finds that she only has three weeks to live.

After leading a very cautious life and living her dreams only through a scrapbook called her “Book of Possibilities”, she throws caution to the wind and turns her book into the “Book of Realities”. It is a very lighthearted movie that carries an important message…”we can choose to exist or we can choose to live life to the fullest”.

Last Holiday is a really great movie and ties into the holiday season very nicely. I always love a good Christmas movie.

Take a moment and ask yourself what’s on you list and then turn your book of possibilities into your book of realities.

I'm currently taking a course based on the book Wishcraft.  It's all about figuring out what your wishes REALLY are, figuring out what the blocks to achieving them are, figuring out how to get through those blocks (and how to turn off "Yes, but . . .", the killer of more dreams than probably anything else), and how to work together with people to achieve your dreams and help them achieve theirs.  A lot of it is about putting things down on paper - but NOT in lists, because when you're brainstorming, it never comes out in list form!  Wer'e using mindmapping, too, as part of this, which seems to work much better for the brainstorming part.

The hardest part, interestingly enough, is identifying your goals clearly enough to put them down on paper, and weeding out the ones that really ARE your goals from the "might be nice" ideas.  Once you get that done, the rest falls into line more or less easily - and having people to help you brainstorm and to whom you are accountable (you report back each week what you've done towards achieving your goals, and one person is to call you for a brief 5-minute call each week to see how you're doing and do you need any help) is also invaluable.

Well, first of all Lucie, thanks for giving me an idea of a movie to rent for the weekend!

You know, it's funny - I get Oprah magazine and rarely get through it - I read it in small doses.  I have always meant to fill in those little 'goal' things that are toward the front of the magazine, but then never get around to it.

I'm going to check out that website - thanks for the 'heads up'!

I will say that I am a typical Type A personality - driven to succeed, totally a positive and "possibility" thinker, and in charge of my own destiny.  I am determined to accomplish all that I can while I can so I will never have any regrets.  Needless to say, as a result of being that way, I never have an extra minute in the day!  I always say that I could use an extra 8 hours - oh the things I could do if I didn't have to sleep!

But for now, I'm just....

Staging It Forward,

Val

Hey Lucie

As we get older we realize that so much of our lives are just spent in a frantic hurry running from one thing to another. While it is great to have motivation and drive to succeed in our businesses, I am realizing more and more how short life is and I am totally trying to make time for the important things in life, like family, friends and helping others.

Keep Staging it Forward
