There are a lot of traditions associated with the arrival of the New Year. In some Countries, for example Scotland, it is one of the biggest holidays of the year. HOGMANAY is also known as "First Footing" and the celebration can last for many days. In the larger Cities it is a huge festival.

Before coming to the USA the tradition of Midnight for me was always to link arms with everyone and sing "Auld Lang Syne.". I have had to adapt to singing that on my own as I have yet to find a group of people who do the same.

This year we were invited to a party that celebrates the first minute of the New Year by making an awful lot of noise by "Banging Pans".

As midnight approached all of the children scurried around to get a pan or a pan lid and something to bang on it, a noise maker to add to the "Symphony" and then they started making some serious noise. The volume level lifted at midnight and then they headed outside to "bang in the New Year" for the neighbors. It was a nice mild night.

Yes, all the pans were a little dinged up, but the Children had a great time. The neighbors did not seems to mind either.

Here are some other interesting New Year Celebrations.

  • Spaniards rush to devour 12 grapes at the start of the new year, eating one with each chime of the clock.
  • Peruvians swallow the grapes whole while sitting underneath a table. They also wear yellow underwear.
  • Brazilians from Rio de Janeiro gather at beaches and plunge into the ocean at midnight bearing offerings of flowers, candles, candies, cigars and sugarcane alcohol to the ocean goddess Iemanja.
  • In the Fort de Chartres, Illinois, residents put on cornhusk costumes and go door-to-door to sing old French tunes. This is an an old French tradition.
  • Norwegians eat a traditional lutefisk meal: mashed green peas, bacon, mustard, boiled potatoes and lutefisk. Lukefisk is a a dried cod fish made with caustic soda.

Ellie, it would seem that those Peruvians really know how to whoop it up on New Years. Sitting under a table in yellow underwear swallowing whole grapes sounds like way too much fun for a person to handle. I'd much rather do what you did this new years and go outside banging pots and pans. It might be a little stressful on the ears, but it sounds like a cathartic activity, great way to start off the year. Happy new year.

What a great tradition that the kids can always look back upon fondly when they grow up.  Sounds like it was a blast!!!

In Ohio many people eat pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day, some insist you have to eat it midnight.  Then those from the south eat  black eyed peas.  Some people here do both. I hate the tradition of shooting guns into the air.  I did not hear any stories of anyone getting hurt doing that this year.  We heard a noise but hoped it was a firecracker not a gun...  although fireworks are illegal for individuals.  Guns?

Hi Ellie, sounds like your kids were loud like mine, although we stuck with the traditional noise makers. We don't have any crazy traditions, just hanging out with friends, but at least we made it past midnight this year.

Hi Ellie- I have heard that in the world of feng shui, making noise at midnight is always thought of as keeping the bad spirits of the new year away from ones home. :0) happy New Year!!
