One of the most important considerations when looking for a new home is choosing your new neighborhood. This is important because:
- This is where you will live for years to come. You can always change a house but you can't ever change where it is.
- This is where you will be making friends with your neighbors, probably builiding lifelong relationships that will enhance your home a thousand-fold
- Your children, if you have any, will make friends with other neighborhood children
Some of the factors to consider when choosing your new neighbohood:
- A location that is convenient to work, whether by driving or public transportation
- A community that offers you what you find important, whether it's to be able to walk to the downtown or privacy, or something in between. Your choice
- A stable area with costs in line with your budget. That includes not only home prices but also cost of property taxes and insurance costs
- Are schools a consideration? If so, reseach the schools online and make sure they offer a curriculum that is in line with your needs
- Are houses of worship a consideration? Visit the house of worship of your denomination, meet the people. Does it feel comfortable to you?
- What are the demographics? Is income and education level a consideration? Are there families with children? What is the ratio of homeowners vs renters? All this is readily available on my website for free. Community Demographics by zip Code
- An area that appeals to you aesthetically
Once you review possible communities that meet your criteria in these categories, then it's time to find your new home. Then find a local real estate agent who knows the nighborhoods and market and can help you find your new home.
