Choosing your new neighborhood for your new home

One of the most important considerations when looking for a new home is choosing your new neighborhood.  This is important because:

  1. This is where you will live for years to come.  You can always change a house but you can't ever change where it is.
  2. This is where you will be making friends with your neighbors, probably builiding lifelong relationships that will enhance your home a thousand-fold
  3. Your children, if you have any, will make friends with other neighborhood children

Some of the factors to consider when choosing your new neighbohood:

  1. A location that is convenient to work, whether by driving or public transportation
  2. A community that offers you what you find important, whether it's to be able to walk to the downtown or privacy, or something in between.  Your choice
  3. A stable area with costs in line with your budget.  That includes not only home prices but also cost of property taxes and insurance costs
  4. Are schools a consideration?  If so, reseach the schools online and make sure they offer a curriculum that is in line with your needs
  5. Are houses of worship a consideration?  Visit the house of worship of your denomination, meet the people.  Does it feel comfortable to you?
  6. What are the demographics?  Is income and education level a consideration?  Are there families with children?  What is the ratio of homeowners vs renters?  All this is readily available on my website for free.  Community Demographics by zip Code
  7. An area that appeals to you aesthetically

Once you review possible communities that meet your criteria in these categories, then it's time to find your new home.  Then find a local real estate agent who knows the nighborhoods and market and can help you find your new home.

Great post Trish, I always recommend that my clients drive the areas they are most interested in at different times of the day and night to get a better feel for what is actually taking place in those neighborhoods.

Gary,  driving around the neighborhoods, shopping in the local markets and dining out in the area are all excellent ways to get a "feel" for the communities too!  Thank you for reminding me!
