New Year's Eve -- Making The Rounds With Family!
Most years we're home for New Year's Eve, maybe dozing in and out on the couch! :)
But this year, we were at Liz's family in Maryland with plans to return home to Ohio on Saturday....so it was time to make the family visits before we hit the highway.
We started off Saturday morning with breakfast at a Frederick establishment, Barbara Fritchie Restaurant. It's a mom and pop kind of place that's been around since 1960, and we met Liz's brother John and his family there! John's wife Sangita, three daughter's and one son. Many hotcakes met their demise that morning! It was fun to spend a couple of hours with everyone.
From there, just a couple of hours of break before hitting the road to get to Liz's Aunt Joan and Unkle Mike's place. They're about 40 minutes east, and from there Mike drove us all down to Annapolis to eat at Cantler's. Just a bit across the river from my alma mater, Maryland seafood at it's best. Mike's kids and grandson Max (7 months old, cute as a button) joined us too. More good eating and joking!
A quick trip over the river and past the state capitol building (bagpipers playing in front of the Anne Arundel county courthouse) and a swing past the U.S. Naval Academy. It was a little late to go on the campus, but I saw lots of familiar sites!
From there, off to one of Joan's son's home for more New Year's Eve celebrations. What seemed like a bazillion cousins and assorted friends, some we only get to see every few years. The "short" visit turned into a couple of extra hours, just enough time for us to get home to Liz's parents prior to the ball dropping at midnight!
A little time with them and a few of their friends still there from their party, and somewhere about 12:30 they were ready to call it a night!
Now we couldn't call the day complete without swinging by the Rain to say Happy New Year! So a quick post of celebration, a few comments left with some of our regulars, and finally time to call it a night!
Not a bad day, maybe we'll do it again next year!
Wishing you a fantastic 2011!
Liz and Bill aka BLiz
Quite the busy day. I'm sure your family & friends were happy to have you make the effort to go round and round Maryland. Hopefully the next time your in this neck of the woods we can have a little AR meeting too.
Wow, what a wonderful (and organized) way to spend the day -- you guys certainly can make the most of 24 hours!!! LOL! Sounds as though you really had a wonderful Christmas and got to see all of those extended family members in the very best of circumstances. I'm heading to that cubicle myself this morning -- gotta get started on those goals . . . glad you're back home safe and sound.
Roger, Yep, feeling a little groggy now that I'm back in the cube. Caffeine...I need lots of caffeine to get through this one :)
Anita, Definitely glad to get back! Back in the routine, lots of stuff to catch up on :)
Cindy, I'd like to do that! I think every day we were in town there was some activity planned, not much true idle time at all :)
Tish, Got to see quite a few more than normally. Part of that is the benefit of staying two weeks instead of the usual one. Glad you got back from VA okay despite the snow. It totally skipped us in Maryland, and the drive home had nothing worse than rain.
Eeegads, that sounds like a packed day! It's nice that you were able to take the time and enjoy it. Hope you've located some caffeine!
Cinnamon, It was :) Up until about 2:30 a.m., made for a slightly tiring drive the next day. We left about noon! And I've got a 6 pack....of Diet Mountain Dew :) Bill
Bliz, we all have fun reading your adventures on the road... and whether you realize it or not, you mention places that mean something to some of us.... always enjoyed our trips to Annapolis. Doesn't look like you had a dull moment :)
Ellie, I often do the same identification with places I've been. There are so many agents here in places that I lived as a kid. One of these days I've got to get back to Annapolis and walk the campus again during daylight! The last two trips have just been a pass down the street outside, too late to go in and be one of the bazillion tourists I used to see when I was a midshipman :)
Bill - Sounds like you and Liz had a great New Years Eve along with some good food. Happy New Year!
Michelle, Certainly a good day and two good meals! Happy New Year to you and your family!
BLiz - Sounds like non-stop fun! Any pics of the sites? Would love to see pics of Annapolis if you took any.
Donne, Unfortunately no pics this time. We got to Annapolis just as it was getting dark, and my problem is all my old shots need to be digitized :)
Hey Bliz, I love Frederick! Ted and I would make many a trip to the very cool downtown area. I've eaten at Barbara Fritchie's, and Cantler's too!!! Never did get a chance to hear the bagpipes played on the Capitol grounds, that must have been festive.
Happy New Year Bliz!
I went to a black tie event on New Years Eve. I'd rather of stayed home with the family, played board games and toasted in the New Year with the ones I love. Maybe next year!
My 2011 resolutions are recorded, how about yours Liz and Bill?
Paul
Cyndee, Small world! We've been to Barbara Fritchie's about a half dozen times over the last few years. Liz loves Cantler's and some of the other seafood places just over the Bay Bridge! We were surprised at the bagpipers being out, and down by the marina was a bit crowded! Happy New year to you!
Paul, AAACCK! I'd have prefered your plan B! I typically don't do resolutions, taking the approach that I can change anytime during the year I want, and if it's important to me the calendar date isn't important :) Bill
Amy's best friend lives in Frederick, and we know it pretty well. We used to live in DC and find that area of the country to be amazing, especially the crab cakes. Once you have Maryland crabs, nothing else compares. We're looking forward to working with you guys on the mastermind challenge.
Dan, Liz's parents live just over the hill in Middletown, her sister also in Middletown, her brother just north in Walkersville and her other brother in Harper's Ferry...so easy to figure out where we need to go if we want to visit her family! And the crabcakes, especially on a nice day right next to the water...tough to beat! We're looking forward to the mastermind challenge too, wondering what the first topic will be!
Feel stuffed just reading about all that food and eating LOl! Nothing beats family get togethers, the best! Here's to much success in 2011!
Wow, I got tired just reading this. We stayed put with the kids home from school. OK, maybe THAT's why I am so tired. =)
Al and Peggy, It was a busy day, but a good day! wound up being up until 2:30 am in the morning, then back up at 8, on the road by noon! :) Happy New Year to you too!
Phil, The kids being home SHOULD wear you out if you're doing it right!
