I just saw that one of the dictionary publishers has decided that since most people, like President Bush II and Sarah Palin, can't seem to pronounce the word nuclear correctly, they would add the incorrect pronunciation to the dictionary as an alternate, correct pronunciation. It's a good thing our home inspectors don't do that. When I worked as a home inspector from October 2001 to August 2005, one of the first things I learned was that just because everyone did something wrong did not make it right. Usually the wrong ways are done because they are easy or cheap. However, the wrong ways usually create various hazards related to safety, health, or fire. Of course, the mere pronunciation of a word is not in the same realm as various hazards, but at what point do dictionaries start accepting alternate spelling, too? Are Twitter spellings next? ♪♫♫♫♪ If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. Hi Jim!
That is absolutely absurd about the incorrect pronunciation being put into the dictionary!! I see this in MLS private remarks frequently when an REO agent is referring to the "addenda" (plural) the bank needs the buyer to sign, but they call them "addendums" ... incorrect!!!
Happy New Year to you!
Just nuts. I've actually hated to see some American "slang" terms make it in.
Happy New Year.
Unfortunately, language is one of those things that can be influenced by common usage. If everyone says it wrong, it becomes the new right. That said, only the New Right seem to be mispronouncing nuclear, and I didn't think that was enough to make the mispronunciation right.
On a more industry-pertinent note, why do so many real estate professionals want me to add verbage to an addendum? Verbage is not a word. If they mean verbiage, why are they asking me to add unnecessary wordiness?
