When we were kids, my Mom always made us a homemade cake for our birthdays. No box cake from my Mom. Never.

My Mom makes fabulous frostings so, of course, the frosting was from scratch too. And it was always decorated the same way. Our age was spelled out in chocolate chips and if there were enough chips, they would be around the outside of the cake too!

My husband Lou's birthday is actually tomorrow, but since tomorrow means the realities of work for both of us and the beginning of rehearsals for the spring musical for our daughter, we decided to celebrate tonight. My Mom and Dad came over and I made (if I do say so myself and I do) the most delicious beef brisket EVER, (from my grass fed cow) mashed potatoes, crusty bread and a light salad.

Lou's cake was not really a cake at all but a layering of graham crackers, pudding, and chocolate frosting. And I could not resist following in my Mom's footsteps.

The brisket was the best ever. It was from 1/4 cow I purchased from a local farmer who raises grass fed, grass finished beef.
