Waterbury CT City Hall Re-Dedicated after a Major Face Lift

On a balmy January 1, 2011 at Noon, the City of Waterbury re-dedicated it's City Hall after a 4 year, $36,000,000 renovation. Years of neglect and over use had taken it's toll and it reached a state that made it unsafe for occupancy. As the building carried Historical credentials, it would have been a shame to demolish it and build a modern glass and concrete structure.

City residents, current dignitaries from the City , local towns and the State, gathered to get a new glimpse at the building. Originally designed by Cass Gilbert and opened in 1915, it was a cornerstone of several majestic buildings that occupy Grand St in Waterbury.

The task was undertaken with the hopes of refinishing and restoring the building and the intricate carvings and brass-work to their original condition. First glance would indicate that they succeeded.

There were some that would have liked to see the building assembly areas, like the Aldermanic Chambers updated with modern WiFi connections, and sound systems, but the Governing Committee chose to stay with the original designs.

Current Mayor Michael Jarjura, who has been running the City for almost 10 years now has been at the head of getting the town's finances back in order, and also was the steady hand to guide the restoration through it's entire process.

This was a large undertaking, which managed to not only come in in time, but also under budget.

  • The original cost of the structure back in 1915 was $1,000,000.
  • The building once housed the police station and the city jail.
  • All brass light fixtures and chandeliers were restored
  • Painted ceilings and walls restored to original color schemes
  • All Mahogany doors and casings were stripped and refinished
  • All marble used in the restoration came from the original quarry in Vermont

In the spring, the front mall area will again have all the colorful plantings and shrubs in bloom, as well as a rear garden.

Hopefully the fountain in the center of the mall will also spray water and serve as a welcome area for locals to sit and stand and just admire the beauty.

I know this area has a warm place in my heart. As a kid, not yet 2 years old, I walked this area with my brother and parents on a spring day, and it made for a pleasant way to spend some time.

Hopefully, there will be funds allocated on a regular basis in the budget to ensure that it doesn't fall into such a state of neglect and dis-repair that it will need such a massive undertaking again.

Ed....what a wonderful post....having roots in a community is very meaningful and when those old photos are displayed it brings back memories of how some things change and also remain the same....I have many memories of generations of my family at the town common in my town.

I enjoyed the historical nature of your blog Ed. What a beautiful piece of architecture and I agree, much more attractive than a new glass structure! I love the photo of you, your brother and mother.

It's nice to see that the money invested was put towards a renovation rather than demolition of this historical landmark. It's definitely a beautiful building.

Barbara, there are so many fine structures in thedowntown area that are worth saving, including 4 other Gilbert designed buildings. Thanks for stopping

Wanda, this location was about a 1/4 mile from where we first lived, all of which has been torn down. The building is very beautiful inside.

Craig, not all progress is positive, this was. Thanks for stopping

Ed -- Wow, that's some restoration.  The interior is beautiful. It should look great in the spring when the landscaping is done.  I'm glad Wtby decided to restore rather than tear down.  Whatever they replaced it with could never come close to this.

Ed from what I can see in the pictures they did a fantastic job of give the Waterbury City Hall a face lift.  They now have a building that should service them for many more years.

Barbara, they did do an incredible job, down to the details. One of the honorary guests was the great grand daughter of the designer, ad she was highly choked up as she toured the building.

Cinnamon, thank you as it comes from an old person as well.

George, yes it should but they do need to be more careful as to how they take care of it. The building had fallen in to quite a state of dis-repair, with chipped and peeling paint, etc. Maintenance of the building can only do so much, then it comes down to care and attention and that's expensive especially when the towns are all hurting for funds.

That is a beautiful building, Ed.  And what a great day to choose for the rededication.  Happy New Year.

Hi Ed,

thank you for sharing this beautiful photos...I love buildings of times old, castles....my memories go back to Germany, to Munich...

.... the locals can be very proud for putting all those resources in preserving history to future generations and beyond,  and making a global contribution to something that is sacred, and that is the meaning that provides it with its special power... peace, tranquility, and great architectural finesse...because that impact goes beyond individual belief system or culture...it is universal. Thank you for sharing. Peter -- Perth -- W.Australia
