Words are previews of things to come.  What you say will likely become what happens.  Here's a unusual exercize to expand the part of your brain that has to do with the structure of thoughtsWrite a poem.  Let a phrase rattle around in your brain, then put it on paper.  Here's how it works for me; read slowly, and tell me if it works for you:

It starts with a thought,
But the thought's just a seed.
It lies dormant in plenty,
And then sprouts when there's need.

Need is the seedbed
Of poems, it seems;
An essential component
Of versified dreams

That flow from the tip
Of my Pelikan pen,
Take shape on the paper
And surprise me.  Again!

For each poem complete
Has a soul of its own;
An expression of promise
From neediness grown

In my 40's, I realized that words take on a life of their own, both in business and in the mind.  If you're serious about your blogging, you'll know what I mean. For the business person, Richard Bayan's Words That Sell is worth buying and keeping next to your keyboard.  Let words and phrases rattle around your brain for a few minutes a day.  Your use of the written word (in letters, contract addenda, blogs, email, advertising, etc.) will improve as you stretch your mind.
Your career will benefit.  Your clients will too.
Who knows?  You might find poetry in your soul.

Sally, I was thinking of you while writing yesterday's blog about Moving to Tucson.  I imagined the sun slipping over the horizon on its way to Hawaii, with shadows dancing on the edges of lava-like cloudbanks.  See if you don't think the photo of that cloudbank looks like your lava.  It's not surprising that you have a poet's soul.  Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Mike ...I enjoyed that very much. You are extremely creative!

As far as creative language with contracts...that's a no no here(NH). We even have a list of "lawyer approved" language we are supposed to use...we are definately encouraged NOT to use our own words!

I don't use "creative" language in my contracts, I save that for my blogs, but I do know the importance of having every inch of your backside covered with a well written contract :)  One little sentence in my last contract saved my clients 2000 dollars, even though we had to go through mediation to get it.  Great poem Mike!

Okay, I'm on vacation in Surf City, NJ, and internet access is $12. per hour at an internet Cafe.'  But two of my favorite readers, Joan in New Hampshire, and Lexa in Tucson, AZ, mention "creative" language in their comments above, so I had to go back and read my post from beginning to end.

I was looking for that word "Creative," because "creative" isn't at all what I intended to convey as being necessary.  And the word's nowhere to be found in my post!

I think I'll go back and edit this, though.  The part of the brain that needs nourishment is the vocabulary/usage part of the brain.  So many business people neglect this part once they're established and successful.

With appreciation for all my readers,
Mike in Tucson (actually, Surf City, NJ at the moment)

Mike:  Good post and interesting comments.  Your last one before mine is right on regarding the vocabulary/usage part.  Very good.

Mike, You're making me work.  I wish it was a "link" to the book. See how  this Internet thing has made us lazy and expecting to have everything handed to us? But I need a book like that so I guess I'll just gave  to go find it. Thank you.

Bill, like it says in the NT, "ask and ye shall receive."  Here's a link to the title on Half.com, where you can buy the book for as little as $7.00 brand new.

Mike - I have had a love affair with words since I was a child.  One of my favorite books was the dictionary.  What an excellent reminder your post is that we must be able to clearly articulate what we mean through the spoken and written word.

Thanks, Marlene.  I have the seriously thoughtful side of me, and it comes out quite often in the form of poetry.  On the other hand, I post things like this about redneck birdfeeders...  Go figure.  Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Mike-  I appreciate this post.  Although I got lured by the rhyme of the poem, I think the point that resounded for me was this " Well written contract addenda require thought, and an acquired ability to structure those thoughts clearly.  Anyone who's ever tried to decipher an addendum written by someone without forethought will appreciate the point!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Sandi.  I think I'm in the same camp as Marlene Bridges, who commented above that she has "had a love affair with words" since she was a child.
