It's 2011 and in 2 days Time My 15th Anniversary of Living Here-Time To Become a Citizen

It's hard to believe that on January 6th 1996 we arrived here in America for a two year assignment with Motorola-my husbands employer at the time. Fifteen years on, we'll obviously the two year assignment ended but we chose to stay and now have our green cards.

We have lived in Barrington since 1997 apart from a 9 month stay in Florida-did not like it there so came back to Barrington. My husband and I have decided to apply for citizenship this year. There was once I time I said if anything happened to him I would take the kids and go back home to England.

Home has changed. Home is now here in Barrington and it will likely be our permanent home for a long time to come. I have plenty of desire to visit many other states, and to visit the UK once in a while but after 15 years our lives revolve around our home here. When you make such drastic moves it's hard to keep up with old friends, you tend to find new ones and I am sure many of our old friends have also moved on.

We embrace life here in the USA, it is different in many ways, similar in others. We live, work and play here but cannot yet contribute to politics as have no right to vote. We would like our votes to be counted. We want to call America our country.

USA CitizenshipSo back to school we have to go. Part of applying for citizenship is a test about the history and government of America. A couple of weeks ago we took the test only to see how well we did with no learning. 51% was not bad considering he and I have never been to school here. No doubt my sons will ace it because they did constitution at school.

On Sunday morning now Jon and I spend half an hour learning about the history and government in America. We have flash cards, all provided by the immigration services department, online of course. I expect to submit our applications next month. One son is on board and wants to join us the other I am not so sure about, but it is his decision, he is 21 now. I have agreed to pay the fees for all 4 of us.

I hope to come back here later this year to announce our naturalization. Wish us luck with the test!

I wonder how well any of us would do on that test the first time without studying! Good luck, Corinne -- I'm sure you'll do well -- please keep us posted!

Good luck on the test.  When you're done you'll know more than most citizens do.

Good speed on your quest.  I have a friend that immigrated in the 50's and just completed his citizenship a few years ago.

Corrine, that's great, I came here twenty three years ago and am in the same boat (excuse the pun). I took the test on line last month and my scores were all over the place. Good Luck, good idea with the cards.

How exciting, Corrine!!  My husband teaches American Federal Government and he gives his class that test. It's really quite embarrassing how many American citizens do on that test - I think 51% is pretty high. Study and enjoy learning!
