How to Embed A YouTube Video Into Your Blog

A Tutorial So Easy Even YOU Can Do It!

Mitch Rutman and The Dave Matthews Band

OK class. Listen up! It's tutorial time.

At one of my dear reader's requests today's lesson will focus on embedding a YouTube video into your blog posts.

For those of you who know how to do this already, please sit quietly and don't ruin it for everyone else. Or you can go here and kill some time pretending you're the boss.

For those who are ready to learn, let's begin.

How to Embed A YouTube Video Into Your Blog

A Tutorial So Easy Even YOU Can Do It!

Level of difficulty - Intermediate

Time - Approximately 10 minutes

Computer Skills Required - If you can turn your computer on, you can do this. I promise!

Cursing Factor - 1 or 2 out of 10

Beers Required to Successfully Complete This Tutorial - Have a 6-Pack on hand. You'll probably only need one or two, but you don't want to risk running out. If you do run out, please raise the Cursing Factor to 10 and seek some help.

First things first. Let's assume you know the basic terms that will be used in this tutorial: Blog, Video, Embed(ding), WYSIWYG, HTML. If not, look them up. You'll want to impress your friends at parties with your new found knowledge.

You're making progress!

Step 1. Write your blog in the WYSIWYG mode. This is probably the hardest part of the tutorial folks. But, write your blog as you normally would. Save it as a draft. By the way, clicking the draft button should be the first thing you do even before you begin writing. The last thing YOU need is to have your blog posted to the Internet before you're ready to unleash your ramblings on the masses.

Step 2. Once your blog comes back up on the screen, click the edit button.

You're making progress!

Step 3. Now don't freak out. But here is where you're going to get involved with some HTML just like a big time grown up computer geek, or these days, your 10 year old kid! Take a deep breath. Sip on that beer and click the HTML tab on the top of your blog.

You're making progress!

Step 4. Now, if you're an organized person, you already have a video in mind that you want to embed. If not, head on over to YouTube and pick one. Any one will do. Adorable kittens and babies laughing are always a good choice if you need a suggestion. For the purpose of this tutorial I'm using a video of my brother playing in concert with the Dave Matthews Band.

You're making progress!

Step 5. Just under the video is the EMBED button. Click it! Magically, the embed code pops up. Copy the code in its entirety. You have other choices here as well. You can add a frame around your embedded video and resize it as well. But we'll cover that another time or you can play around with it and see what happens. However, I can not be held responsible for anything that might go wrong!

The EMBED button can be found just under the video.

Step 6. Now that you have copied the HTML code, go back to your blog, which if you've followed the directions is still in draft mode and in the HTML view. Paste the code you've copied into your blog.

The EMBED code looks like this. Don't freak out. Just copy it!

Step 7. Take a deep breath, another sip of beer, and click the submit button on your blog. Don't worry, your blog is still in draft mode. No one will see if you screwed it up......yet!

Step 8. If  you did everything correctly marvel at your blog with its newly embedded video in it! If not, increase the cursing factor by one, drink another beer, and start over. Clearly you didn't follow the directions!

But wait! We're not done just yet.

There are two more steps....

Step 9. Subscribe to my blog.

Step 10. Say thank you!
