To Be or Not To Be - Branded With a National Company

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with The Property Source

If you are a licensed broker, is there any advantage to being with a national brand company versus being out on your own?  I realize that there are certain advantages to being with a brand company - floor time, leads, referrals, wonderful advertising software, security - all for a cost.  Let's face it, it costs a lot to work with a national company.

When you're with a branded company and it's all said and done at the end of the year, what do you have?  A lot of closed sales and awards but come January, you're starting back at zero.  On the other hand, if you are starting your own company, you're building something that's yours - something that you might even be able to sell in the future.

Do you think clients really care what company you work for?  Do they care if you are affiliated with a national brand or not?  Or, do they just care about what you can do for them and how well you do it?  When clients hire you are they hiring you because of your reputation, or because of what brand you work under?  What's your opinion?

The name recognition of a franchise may help to get you in the door, but it all comes down to the individual in the end. Professionals will prosper and grow regardless of what name is on the sign. By the same token, lousy agents will still be lousy regardless of what name is on the sign.

Janet...it sounds like you've been doing a bit of thinking on the subject matter. I've been on both sides of the fence and currently own my own brokerage. i believe that people will choose YOU...not the company. Best decision I ever made was to go out on my own. I won't say it's easy...but anything worth having is hard work.
