Over my past few years of blogging, I've judged several contests here on Active Rain. And yesterday, I wrote a post announcing a new one: New Contest!!! Just How Addicted Are You To Active Rain?
Like many of the contests here, this one is designed to be fun, a little challenging, and a fun way to earn a few extra points.
So what are the judges going to be looking for as they pore over all the entries, not necessarily just for this contest, but in general? Here are a few tips if you want to land one of the big prizes:
- Use photos or clip art to make your point. As someone recently wrote, "A blog without a picture is like a sundae without a cherry," or something like that. It will make your post show well and can add flavor.
- Your post should be well-orgainzed.
- Edit your post carefully. Keep typos (and wordos and grammaros to a minimum - like I could do that, but hey!).
- If you are telling a story, try to be clear when you write about what happened (and in the case of this contest, a little funny and pathetic will help). Making a judge laugh is a good thing in most contests.
- Be economical with your words. Don't use five words when three will do. Less is usually more.
- Once you finish writing your entry, go through and "wordsmith" it - this is a concept that a journalist friend introduced me to. It's good for polishing your finished product.
- Follow the rules for posting, which are set up to make sure that we can actually find your entry, not to complicate your lives.
When I've judged other contests, I've noticed that there seem to be a few real standouts. But whether or not you take one of the top prizes, Active Rain contests are fun.

Thanks Pat for the helpful information. I do plan on entering your contest. I am thinking about different ideas.
I will have to go back and read this one. Sounds fun.
I've already read some great posts. We have some very funny members here at AR.
There are many addicts on AR - good tips. Pat, for 'expressing' the addiction...
Hello Pat and "Thanks" for the tips kid I need them!
Robert
Pat - great tips ... especially the one about [reading] the rules ... some times it seems that reading is not one of the strongest traits of real estate agents ... (LOL)
Pat, Great advice for contests or just general day to day posting! And we entered your contest, but how could we resist?
Pat, I have heard of RTFM but now it is RTFCR. Enough already. Don't you know how busy we are just entering all these contests?
PS ..You do have an awesome and creative mind.
Margaret
Pat,
Thanks for the tips, we could use them for our everyday writing. Good advice ma'am.
Nice principles...they actually apply to every type of post, not just contests.
Pat, excellent points and as Debbie above mentiones good ideas for all blog posts. BTW I loved the picture you used to illustrate the one. I am not sure I want to tell everyone HOE addicted I am to AR but enjoy all the contests anyway!
Pat --- enter the contest or not, either way these are great tips for blog writing. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Very helpful!
Pat,
Good idea and great tips. Have fun with it. A
I'm still trying to enter some of these contest. They sound great and I'd really like to participate in them.
Pat - I still think we need a specific button on top of each page that links to all of the various contests we have here in The Rain! I love your clip art!!!
Pat

Howdy and evening to you Patricia
Patricia, mighty fine tips you have gave to folks taking part in any of the contests that take place here in the AR community. Hope you have a lot of members take part in your contest.
Have a good one

Pat, I think your second last bullet point is deserving of a post of it's own..."WORDSMITHING IT" I will try to google it, but also watch for a post :)
Good writing tips, Pat... contest or not. I've noticed, in judging contests, that there are usually a handful of people that simply didn't read the guidelines. So that would be a biggie, in my mind. And you're right... there are almost always standouts that make it easy to pick a winner.
Good tips, Pat. I wish I had had them prior to entering a contest but since it's my first one, I think I did okay. I like Barbara-Jo's idea of a button across the top menu to link to all contests.
