Houses, Cars and Money

Have you ever heard that saying, "Frugal Yankees"?  Well, it would appear that it really is true!

A.G. Edwards has announced their annual "Nest Egg Index" which rates communities and states around the country based on a variety of factors - putting money away for retirement, personal savings, investments and investing behavior, home ownership, personal debt levels, etc.

I always find these surveys rather smug. The southern states are always at the bottom. There is a reason for this as we have too poor people who do not know the ropes of life. There are other people who are very happy here and would never live anywhere else. It always makes me mad because the surveys never give reason why this is so.

I'll have to admit some of my stuff will last forever.... Hate to toss out something that can still be used but I'm learning to weed out some clutter.

Hi Eric - I have found that southern states are usually at the bottom of some of these types of surveys, for whatever reason.  I'm from Florida - loads of family all over central Florida - and I don't like that southern states aren't ranked better in alot of surveys.  I have, however, seem the reverse on some surveys as well.  I can't recall what some of them were, but southern states do come out better than northern states in some categories.

Sorry you didn't like this one.....

Hey Brother Dan!

I hear ya hanging on to stuff.  I have a hard time getting rid of stuff if it's still good and there's still some life to it.  Bear and I have been weeding out the garage, and I started in on the house last weekend to get rid of stuff - stuff that we haven't used in ages and never will use.  Someone else can probably get some good use out of it, so we'll have a garage sale soon.

Clutter......

Thanks for finding and posting that Ann.  I will use it on my "outside" blog, with attribution, of course!  The town I live in and a couple nearby were on the first page, so that is pretty good I think.

Ann,

Nice way to look at how states are doing. It is actually surprising that Nevada is ranked in the top half, although barely. For some reason I didn't think it would make it that high. But we'll take it and hopefully keep on climbing.

Hi Joanne - use away!  I love surveys like this, even if my state or my area doesn't show up - I just think they're really interesting.  If your areas ranked highly, promote that ranking!

Hey Monika - guess that bursting attic is further testament to yankee frugality!!  My attic is clean as a whistle, but my garage on the other hand.......  not for long though!   ;-)

Hi Esko - being in the top half is pretty good, I think!  And no matter what, there's always room to keep getting better!!

Thanks for reading!

I should be more frugal myself, though that may go against my personal catchphrase.  I like that you brought this to light Ann, it gives a reality-check to the financial disposition of why some have more than others.  Speaking of which, I have money to spend and miles to go before I bend:-)  MWA to you, that's a freebie of course:-)

Ann - I love reports like this - it's that statistical data thingy! :) Indiana and Indianapolis were both above average. Now, lets get them investing in real estate.

I love this kind of stuff.  Connecticut probably has the advantage of all those folks that live in CT and work in New York with the gazillion dollar bonuses.

Ann, great article. I too love this type of thing. You beat us. CA was rated 22. The best part though was the Yankee saying...more folks ought to read that and live by it!!

Sally - that's not bad at all - very good as a matter of fact!  Good for the Aloha State!

Jason- well head on up this way with your money to spend and your miles to go!  MWA back at ya!

Paula - above average is great!  So, since both are frugal, they should be recognizing that this really is a great buyer's market in real estate - buy now!

Linda- you're right about having all those folks, and they appear to also be thrifty and frugal, too!  Looks like a lot of us like this type of information!

Gena - CA being #22 is pretty darn good!!  I LOVE that saying!  I first read it on the cover of "Yankee Magazine" years ago after we moved up here, and I've since seen it repeated a number of times.  Apparently, I have adopted that saying rather well - I have far too much stuff that hasn't worn out and I just don't seem to be able to part with because it's still "good".   ;-)

Many thanks for reading and for your comments - much appreciated!!

Ann,

I would have never thought of a frugality index.  I hope I can make use of that frugal yankee saying for myself - I like that one.

Hi Rita - I hadn't heard about this index before either, but I found it interesting.  I love that saying and have shared it with a number of people - it's just one of those that rolls right off my tongue!

Ann, very interesting Michigan was number 10. Yes, I have heard the expression and growing up in the South, also heard #^&@ Yankees.  My kids use to ask me when we went home what a $@*& Yankee was and why all my relatives called them that. Funny, they were all born in MI except for one who was born in Alabama.

Hi Missy - Yay for Michigan!  Hmmm, "#^&@ Yankees", huh?  Maybe they meant that baseball team out of New York....no?   ;-)

This is interesting information.  I wonder how wide they did their study (ie, did they use only their clients or do survey's?).  Thanks for sharing this!!

Hi Christina - I often wonder what the pools are for any kind of survey I read.  Who knows?!  I do find them interesting to read though.
