I recently wrote about how a phrase I coined, SEO Debt, is indebted in its concept to a phrase coined by Ward Cunningham, Technical Debt, which for all the esoteric definitions out there, simply means that shortcuts taken now in code and application development, and IT projects in general, accrue a certain backlog of problems that have to be addressed later, sometimes at a heavy price in reprogramming and restructuring an entire module or project because, now, after the important deadline has been met, the problems become evident. Problems that were glossed over or ignored in the name of speed. There are fancier names like deliverables, but it's about speed because someone set a deadline that was, apparently, worth more than an quality and functionality. That's how you get Microsoft products and that's how you end up with a near backlog of service packs and critical updates. You can read a much more elegant series on Acrowire about technical debt. In essence, SEO debt is the same because it eats away at the very core of what your SEO is supposed to support. You can read my article here on SEO Debt and how it contrasts with Technical Debt. Essentially, the article says, if you take shortcuts in an SEO campaign, you're going to have to pay it all back in the end so just pay as you go and get "rich" slowly and honestly.

SEO is a lot like pottery making- if you go too fast or cut corners, it just won't work out.
