A Volunteer At The Vietnam War Memorial

Volunteer at Vietnam War MemorialWe visited the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC for the first time just before New Years.
It was a cold winter day and yet there were many people visiting this memorial.  At first glance it was humbling to see the 58,175 names of fallen soldiers.  These thousands of names engraved in slabs of stone did not appear to be in any apparent order, but each slab of stone had a number, like a page in a book.

There was a man in a yellow jacket who turned out to be a volunteer for the Park Service. He said the names appear in chronological order of when each soldier died.  There is a directory off of the side of the memorial where you can look up a person alphabetically then find their location on the wall.  The wall is made in slabs and numbered to make the search easier.

This volunteer has been doing this work for 8 years, if I recall correctly.  He appeared to be a gentle person who honors those memorialized on these slabs by volunteering for the Park Service only at the Vietnam War Memorial.

Doug,

It is an honorable service that gentlan provides his fallen brothers. Interestinf thing I heard once, it is said that the list of names is larger than the phonebooks of over 30% of the countries cities.

Patrick, Not surprised to hear that comparison.  Thanks for stopping by.

Doug and Gloria - I have visited a number of state and federal sites which are manned by large numbers of volunteers.  Our California State Railroad Museum, here in Sacramento, is one that uses a good sized volunteer force.  Also, Sutter's Fort does.  I think the budget crisis we are in, makes it especially important for folks to consider volunteering a little time to keep these important places operational.

Doug & Gloria, I salute you! This a great tribute to our American Vet's from Viet Nam. One of the first thing I did after my husband passed away,  was to take my children to see the Wall and I'll never forget the experience. They may be gone, but not forgotten..... ever! I've been to many other Veterans Memorials in other states but none can compare to the one in D.C. It's awe inspiring and chilling but inspirational too. When you see their names scrolled up and down the wall, you can't help feel patriotic.

Thank you for remembering them and putting this on your Blog. I know the familes appreciate it. All live's blessings to the both of you.

Myrl, It is good that there are people willing and have the time to volunteer.  Park systems are often places that get cut budgets get tight.  Volunteering is a great way to give back.

Pat, Thank you.  Visiting DC is something everyone should get to do at least once to see the buildings and memorials in person.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your husband, was he a Veteran? Nice that you were able to take time away with your children to support each other on a journey.  A caring way to handle grief.

Take care,
Gloria

Gloria, yes he was my pen pal in Viet Nam when I was a 16 year old High School girl. After he got discharged, he came to my door, still in uniform, with a dozen roses and he asked my father for permission to marry him. My dad approved. We were married for better or worse, until death do we part, and I have no regrets. I promised him I would take our kids to the Wall to tell them our love story, and I did. I still honor the Vets.

Patricia, Gosh what a story.  A pen pal.  Have your written about your experience here on AR as a post?  You have a gift for writing and I'd imagine you have written a bit on this subject over the years.  I'm sorry to hear of your loss.  Thanks so much for your openness.
