Living In Denver, Get Ready For A Drive - Its Almost Fall Foliage - Time To See The Aspens

As I was writing my recent Post, Why Aspens May Not be the Right Choice for Denver Home Owners, I was reminded that it is almost time to hit the car for the day, head to the west and view our flickering golden aspens.

denver aspen leavesThe Fall is my favorite time in Colorado and making it up to the mountains to enjoy the fall floiage and the changing of the Colorado aspens is just something no one should ever miss, especially if you have only recently moved to Colorado.  And if you are planning to move, now that it is something you will truly enjoy in the future.

Here are a few of my favorite day trips from Denver to enjoy the changing of the leaves.  You can find many more suggestions here as well.  You can see in the picture that the aspen leaves are just starting to turn here in the Denver Area, the next 2 weeks in the High Country should start to be grand and you will see lots of color generally through the first week or so of October in Denver.

Guanella Pass- Hands Down this is my favorite.  Probably because I have such wonderful memories of the day my family spent driving this pass when my children were so young.  There is a potion of the road that is unpaved (about 12 to 15 miles or so) but it is a very mild gravel road and most cars will be fine as long as the weather holds.  There are numerous lakes along the pass and we stop often to get out, walk around and just relax and enjoy.  There are also stunning views of Mount Evans in the distance.  To reach Guanella Pass from Denver, take I70 to Georgetown and eventually you will be brought out to 285, which will lead you back to Denver.

Kenosha Pass- Take 285 west out of Denver (Hampden) and drive towards Fairplay.  Another breathtaking pass which will allow you plenty of time to get out of the car and take beautiful photos of the aspens fluttering their golden leaves.

Golden Gate Canyon Sate Park - Located off of Highway 93 Between Golden and Boulder, Golden Gate Canyon State Park has a a great variety of activities and also has large aspen groves.  There is also over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails in the park.  Pack a picnic, if you plan to hike a bit, you are going to want to find that perfect spot to relax and enjoy such beautiful scenery.

Georgetown Colorado is one of the popular spots as well, and many are so glad that the Georgetown Loop Railroad is running again (after a short hiatus a few years ago) as this allows everyone a chance to get out of the car and sit and enjoy the Loop train ride from Georgetown to Silver Plume and back.  Young children will especially enjoy the experience on this coal engine train.  Georgetown is located off of I70, about 35 miles west of Denver.

Great list of locations! I use to love the Golden Gate park area for quick trips. And I've just started noticing the colors changing down here. I look up into a canyon from my yard and there are just little hints of color now.

Hi Steve, one that is a little longer, but gorgeous in the fall is the loop of I-70 through Glenwood canyon to Glenwood, south to Aspen, over Independence pass to Twin lakes.  Then either through Leadville back to I-70 at Copper Mountain or back through the Arkansas Valley to 285 and back to Denver.  As I am already in Summit County it saves a few hours, but it is one of my favorites for out of towners this time of year.

Our leaves are turning now, but we have a couple of weeks before peak.

Thanks Dena - We drove to the Springs and back today and I only saw hints of color on the aspens but it is just around the corner.  You are right, Golden Gate is great - and its really fairly close to us here.

Joanne - That would be a great weekend one as well for those that have time to make some stops, relax and enjoy.  I am hoping the leaves wait to fall until after I get up there at the end of the month.

see now...I'm jealous!!  That's the one thing we don't have here in Miami, seasons!!  I visited my mom in Cleveland several years ago just to see the leaves change, I had never thought of those aspen leaves!

Ines - Yes, the leaves are quite nice around these parts.  You mean to tell me there is no fall foliage on the palm trees?  We have relatives that have schedule trips here to Denver for the end of Sept/beginning of Oct for the leaf viewing as well.

LOL! Steve......no fall foliage on palm trees!  Although we do have gorgeous flowering trees all year long and year round flowering landscaping as well.....I guess it's not all that bad. : )

Steve, Wow!  Beautiful drive it sounds like.  I want to take my son to see snow sometime, he is 21 now and I better do it quick.  He seen snow once or twice, it doesn't stick however.  Whenever we plan a trip, there is no snow.

Ines - I thought you would might get a chuckle.  We have some family scattered in different parts of Southern Fla, so I have been there and you are right - it is very pretty, especially in the winter.

Candy - If you want to see snow in Colorado, you are right, there are many times in the winter here that you will miss it.  Because of our strong sun and mild temperatures, once it snows, it can be gone rather quickly.  Plan a side trip to the mountains between Dec and March (even into April) and you will see snow.

Steve--Our leaves are just starting to turn here in MN. The birches didn't fair well with the excessive heat and dry conditions this summer but the sumacs are turning red with the maples. Fall is one of my favorite seasons as the colors on the trees with the blue sky and white clouds can be breathtaking...Our land is all flat. To see it along the mountains of Colorado must be beautiful!

Teri - It really is.  And we other trees that highlight the aspens gold with other great colors as well.  Its all really stunning.  I hopefully will post some current pics in the weeks to come.

I was just on vacation in Alaska and it was peak time for the changing leaves in Denali National Park.  It was stunning!  It has really made me anticipate the colors changing in Colorado and I expect I will be taking one of these drives myself.

Hi Meredith, How amazing to have had the opportunity to visit Alaska.  I imagine everything was stunning, fall foliage & all.

Steve--I will try to post some as well from Carlos Avery nature preserve. If I can get down by the Mississippi or St Croix Rivers the colors are great too. Will watch for yours.

Steve - thanks for reminding me - I think I will head over our mountain pass tomorrow and see if the colors are changing yet... I love it when the aspens change color

I am hearing that the leaves changed practically overnight this week.  This weekend should be a great time for Metro Denver residents to take some long rides up into the mountains.

Steve, you need to get your camer ready so you can catch it on film for us. I love living in the Houston area but do miss the fall colors.  I think we are coming that way for Christmas but those leaves will be long gone by then.

09/22/2007 03:29 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Marchel,  We will be up in the mountains next weekend, so hopefully I will not be too late then but I hear that certain areas are peaking in colors now or are about too.

Steve, I will be looking for those pictures.  I do miss seeing those aspen turn!!!!!!

There is a story on a local news website today about major pothole on the road to Guanella Pass - so if you go, be alert.  You can read their report here.  I have not yet been up there this year myself so this is not spoken from my own experience, just from what I read today on the news website.

09/23/2007 09:31 AM by Steve Scheer - Denver Real Estate - Highlands Ranch Real Estate (RE/MAX Masters, Inc.)

We are peaking in Summit County right now Steve!  I has been gorgeous this year.  It looks like it could rain today, and if it gets windy we could lose the leaves quickly.  I am sure lower down it will still be good for a week or two yet.

09/23/2007 09:57 AM by Summit County, Colorado Realtor l Joanne Hanson (Coldwell Banker Colorado Rockies Real Estate)

Its going to get cool here later too Joanne.  When I heard rain, I did think that the leaves could go.  I am hoping that it will hold out for us until Friday. Thanks for the update Joanne.
