Like sand sifting through my fingers...

Like sand sifting through my fingers...Like sand sifting through my fingers...

I remember reading another person's post about how glad he was that the year was oh-oh-ov-er! 2010 was difficult for many in the industry across the country. Lee, my real estate partner and I had a share of disappointments, especially toward the end of the year.

We had 3 transactions that fell off, one after another for various reasons:

  • one client experienced buyer's remorse
  • and a seller refused to come down on price
  • the bank perceived a property was worth more than market value

We were anticipating the income that would come from these modest sales but knew our client's best interests ruled above and beyond any other factor that presented itself. Sometimes things go wrong, even when you are doing everything right and the only thing to do is to see it through to the end.

And I have to admit when each transaction failed...it felt like sand sifting through my fingers...and no matter how tightly I squeezed them together...the tiny granules continued to escape...I think I'll grab another handful and try, try again! 2011 does look promising!

Wanda, I feel your pain. It's been a difficult 2-3 years, but as we've had to learn from this we will be stronger in the years to come.

Wanda, that is the only attitude to have. We see things fall apart, it hurts us financially, but we move on. What more can we do? Things just keep getting better!

Wanda, it is hard for us to depend on a closed sales to earn our pay check, so many things can go wrong.  It is like riding a roller coaster, we may not know what is ahead of us until we reach that point.  That's why it is so important for us to have the mentality and positive attitude in this industry.  Experience taught us how to prepare and take the consequences and move on to the next chapter without looking back.  I have faith we will be great in 2011.

Wanda, I feel you pain. I was going into 2011 with 3 transaction set for January. One buyer had complications with the lender and it appears that they won't get their loan. This is a double loss as they were buying a short sale and that seller is now back in the system. There was a glimpse, however, as one of my listings did get a contract and hopefully that one will be a Valentine's present.

The buyer that had complications will still be a potential for late spring.  All we can do is grin and go on and make sure our clients are well serviced.

Thanks Bill, The best way to overcome the past is to look forward. The best to you in 2011 as well!

Thanks Gerry, I came into the industry at the worst time, during the decline and do agree this year will be better than last year by far!

Glenn, We are still here and that is most important. This is going to be an amazing year!

Andrea, Being positive helps alleviate some of the stress that comes from failed transactions and helps us to move forward. Here's to a great 2011!

Rita, You are right, experience is a great teacher of many things and in order to be successful in this industry, we must continue to look ahead!

Ed, You had your share too and providing exceptional service to clients will pay off eventually. Maintaining a positive attitude really helps!

Wanda there have been so many challenges for all of us to nagvigate since 2007 on. 2010 was better than 2009 and I do believe 2011 will be better than 2010.  I too look towards the postive - try do everything in my power to complete transactions for my clients - some of which have just been beyond my control by a long stretch (short sales and non-responsive banks in a timely fashion). One thing is for sure - those of us who have stuck with these challenging last years are the true professionals that wouldn't consider leaving our profession. It's what we do and love.

Though challenging the last few years have been, it has only made us more determined to continue in a positive direction and when I cheer others on, I am also doing it for myself...it's my inner cheerleader speaking to me! You are a true professional and I am so very lucky to know you Anna!

Wanda,

Successful agents are able to shake it off, and move on. Grab another handful of sand and hold on tight. I do believe that things are starting to turn around and that 2011 is going to be a great year.

Hi Wanda:

It never fails, some transactions will just not go to closing for one reason or another.

As much as we try to turn that sand into cement, some sand still slips through!

It does hurt a bit doesn't it.  But that's when you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again. And they say we make too much money, jeez!  Naysayers should see your story.
