I have a hobby, I have another life outside of Real Estate!

Real Estate Agent with The Creig Nothrop Team of Long & Foster

I have an addictive hobby...I love to quilt!  I don't often brag about them because I spend much of my free time piecing the quilt tops together and then lovingly folding them and putting them in a closet to someday quilt!  I have all of the equipment to get the job done, three Bernina sewing machines, two of them have embroidery units to attach, a serger and a long arm quilting machine.  I honestly believe I have quilting ADD (if there is such a thing)  No sooner than I get one top done, I see another one I want to try.  It is honestly a sickness!  (I made this one with the monkeys on it for a really good friend's daughter's baby shower.  The baby was born on Christmas day and is using it right now!  This does make me proud.)

Now I usually don't make New Year's Resolutions....I just don't stick to them as much as I would like to.  So I just don't...But I did decide that I would try to quilt all 6 quilt tops that I have up in the "Quilt Closet" before I make anymore tops....This will be very hard for me because I already have the fabric and pattern picked out that I saw in a magazine and I have it set aside just waiting to get started!

It is like the pack of cigarettes that the person that quit smoking has left out to sneak back to for a short smoke!!!!  Ok, so that isn't a great metiphor....Sorry!  But it really is hard to not start that new, beautiful pattern, just to see how those colors will go together and how the blocks will come out...It's kinda like putting together a puzzle that you are creating yourself.  It is a work of creative art!

This all being said..you may be happy to know that I actually have now finished one of these shelved quilts (seen here on the left) and have already put the next one on the machine, did about 1/4 of it so far and intend on getting it quilted and bound pretty soon.

I am not sure if I can keep this up or if I will give in to my passion to get the next quilt top started and start cutting and piecing before I get all six of these tops quilted, but we all shall see!!

I depend on my close quilt buddies to keep me focused on finishing these, So every time I get weak, I just call on them to give me strength.   I will try to give you an update as I progress.  As for the real estate market....It is really picking up for me........What about you?

It is really picking up here also.  Been down for awhile and now we are borderline busy and its still early January!  I can't complain as we have always been steady but can't say really busy and just might be able to soon

Joyce, I don't know how anyone who quilts could have ADD! lol That is a very intense hobby :) I guess you are referring to not finishing them? Well, now you are conquering that and you do make lovely quilts. They are heirlooms for the people you give them to. Keep it up! :)

Oh Joyce, I know what you mean.  I got into making quilts approximately 22/23 years ago.  I made tops and my way of dealing with the "quilting" issue was to tie them.  :-)  Thank goodness for cotton batting that doesn't come apart.  I forget what it's called.  My favorite size quilt tops to make is lap size.  Big enough to snuggle under, yet managable in size.

With that said - I will say that I haven't sewn in years.  I did sew a little after my son was born 19 years ago, but then we relocated and I started working FT (in real estate), I barely had time to sew.  I am afraid to take my machine out now because I know what will happen!  One of my passions is collecting American Girl dolls and I know I would spend my time sewing 18" doll clothing and making quilts for each and every one of them.  I have over 20 dolls.  Can you imagine how much fun that would be?  ;-)

And yes - real estate has been picking up for me as well.  Geez, who has time for all this stuff?  LOL

Thanks for sharing your story - it was fun to think about sewing/quilting again.  Enjoy your passion.  :-)

Joyce: You did an awesome job on those Quilts. I love to read during my free time, but now I don't have enough time in the day to do it. I need to work on making it happen.

Hi Joyce,

Nice to see a hobby that someone who is so busy in r.e. has something else to enjoy, and in your case so beautiful!

When it comes to follow though finishing projects, it's an issue for many of us. And do we see it all the time with "do it yourself" homeowner projects? You bet.

It's something that can also be applied to our r.e. life, follow through and consistancy can make all the difference!
