Karns Real Estate and Neighborhood Information - Knoxville, TN

The Karns subarea of Knoxville is located to the north-west of downtown Knoxville.  Karns is a community, rather than a city, and it borders the communities of Hardin Valley and Solway to the west, the Cedar Bluff area is just to the south, the Norwood area is to the east and the city of Powell borders Karns to the northeast.  The primary zip code of Karns is 37931 and part of zip codes 37921 and 37849 are included in the Karns subarea.

The Karns community was formerly called Beaver Ridge. However, in 1913 when the first high school building was erected in Karns, the school was named in honor of Professor T.C. Karns, the first Superintendent of Public Instruction for Knox County. Later, in the 1950s, the community voted to officially change its name from Beaver Ridge/Byington to Karns.

Karns has grown from primarily a farming area to a community with a population of over 20,000. Mixed among the remaining farms and pastures are subdivisions, small businesses, schools, and light industry. The Karns schools are part of Knox County Public Schools, and including Karns High School, enroll over 3,700 students from Karns, Ball Camp, Hardin Valley, and Solway. Most people commute to work but are dedicated to maintaining a high standard of living through their involvement in community activities.
